Default CONFIRMED: ATi R520 will ship with 16 (sixteen, thats right) pixel pipelines.

In somewhat shocking news (considering the move from the initial spec of 32, then 24, now a mere 16pp), ATi has decided to bump the pixel pipelines down to 16 in it's next flagship GPU (R520). According to ATi, extreme clock speeds will compensate it enough to approximately match the 7800GTX in performance. More [From the Inquirer]

I'm sorry...what? 16 pipelines is somehow going to be compensated with high speed clocks? When you add HDR and ASF/AA etc into that mix its going to be one shockingly bad result...ATi just made a bad move.

I'm still waiting for the day ATI makes a decent linux driver like Nvidia. Mentioning ATI in a linux IRC channel usually gets you a reply "ATI is gehy"

Kinda makes me debate the idea of getting an X800XL now.. Eh, oh well. If theres one upgrade I've needed (since I've been artifacting since June or so) its the videocard..

In terms of modern news reporting the Inquirer is a Tabloid. While they often tell true stories, they also spead rumours. To call this Confirmed is just crazy.

Lets hope you're the right of us... I'll admit, they may have a rumor or two in the past, but these kinds of prospects (combined with the fact we all knew of ATI's extremely LOW sucessful fab rate on the high-piped cards); one plus two says three may verywell be ugly..

I've never liked banks to well so I've got to wait til tomorrow to get the cash from my sister (who holds my money) to order this new CPU. It will be next.

I had the top single card score for the 3DMark05 Benchmark challange. I don't think it's been updated lately but I will have a top score again,

If this turns out true, ATi seems to be going for a strategy change. Maybe they think they can't beat nVidia and are going to occupy more of the lower end of the market away from the enthusiast sector. Maybe it'll turn out like Intel and AMD - one mostly at the consumer end and one mostly at the enthusiast end.

The 16 pipe rumor is not confirmed, nor is it true. I can't find a link to it (I thought it was on hexus.net), but I read they will have 32 pipe, 24 pipe, and 16 pipe solutions.

Here are some links to info on the R520:

well I know of no reliable way of mesuring a gpu's performance just by looking at it's pipelines and clock speeds so ATI might be telling the truth and their card might be faster. I mean the 9800xt pwns my card and I have the same number of pipelines and can clock much faster than the 9800xt's 412MHz / 730MHz. and my card has a 256bit mem bus. So don't knock the x1800 or whatever dumb name it has before you see performance figures .

That's wierd, because it looks EXACTLY like the ATI Silencer 4 that's on my X800 Pro.

At first, we thought that the R520 mounting holes will be similar to X850XT but it seems otherwise. In fact, it is similar to the GeForce 6800 Ultra so we employ a nVidia cooler to R520

Wow, just.. Wow, - If this even turns out to be partially true ( I know, Inquirer this, inquirer-sLaP!!) But, daang, ATi's new claim: X1800XT's <%20 to %90 speed over the 7800 GTX!! I'd really like to believe..
