I know they were trying to make a standard so you could do that in the Dell XPS systems but I dont know if they did. Most likely you cant upgrade the video card in your laptop like you can in your desktop.

There are laptops with PCI-E interface video cards, so newer video cards like the x800's and 6800s have native support for the laptops. No more AGP to PCI-E bridge. Laptop boards are so propriatary and compact that upgrading them/ making them upgradable is very hard, but just like desktop pcs laptops are switching over to the PCI-E. And I have heard that some of the PCI-(E)xpress laptops will have upgradable graphics cards.

But considering that laptop has a AGP card and its video ram is being shared from your system ram(meaning this thing is a part of the motherboard), I wouldnt hold my breath:

ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® 9550 8X AGP

64MB Video Memory

Correction here. He said its dedicated which most likely means it has its own dedicated memory. It probably is AGP which also means it would have its own memory not sharing with the system.

I've heard my XPS gen 2 is upgradeable when newer cards come out, but I still don't know how thats going to work, my guess is I'll be sending it to dell and then they will install it. If its under warrenty don't upgrade you may void the warrenty and If you have a dedicated card that means its swapable but the mobo is most likely to be propritary, in short you will have to go to the company you bought it from or the mobo manufature to get a new card.

Opps I read it wrong, I guess the point of my post was that there is a good chance AGP based laptop cards wont be upgradable, while PCI-E based laptops will.

(I misread the specs I googled, and thought it said 64mb shared video ram) just X-out the:

"But considering that laptop has a AGP card and its video ram is being shared from your system ram(meaning this thing is a part of the motherboard), I wouldnt hold my breath"

Just pop off(screw off) the things on the bottom (acess for harddrive(s), RAM..so on) you may see a graphics card. If so your in luck, then you will have more questions to ask
