Default Using S-Video Out

Ok, my friend has the ATI 9800 Pro and is trying to use the S-Video output on it. Is their a setting you have to turn on to use it?? I was trying to compare my menus with my 9800xt with his, and they're different... I tried to walk him through a few things over AIM, but we couldn't figure it out... any suggestions?

WOW! i had the same exact problem with my 9800pro back when my monitor shorted out.. I got stuck with using a Geforce 4 mx420 (PCI) until my friend Ti Zakit gave me an old 15" compaq to use. If you figure it out tell me, i would like to know.

Lightbulb ATI 9800 PRO S Video out

I looked on ATI.com for the 9800 PRO manual and it shows how to hook the S video out to a TV set. The explanation seems very vague. Like you have to try it and see what happens. It might be kinda hard if your monitor dies and you don't have a manual available. Go to their website and print it out before you have any problems. Hope this might bo of some help. Ken

HERE is how you make it work:
Hook the S-video cable up to a TV after shutting down your PC. Hooktheother end into your 9800PRO's S-video-out port. Press POWER on thePC Chassis. Both TV & Monitor should display BIOS bootup info etc.( if powered on) until you login to windows, after that, go to controlpanel, then Appearance Themes, then into your Advanced DisplaySettings, under Displays, enable your TV.-Wallah!

Ok, that sort of worked. I can see that it was trying to work... hahaha... pretty much what was happening was, when he turned the computer back on, he could see the BIOS screen on both the monitor and the TV, but on the TV, it was sort of flipping between signals apparently... like it didn't like the signal it was getting. Any thoughts?

Yeah the screen flipping is normal and happens with al cards - the card is sending the signal but its out of sync and not setup correctly as the driver for the card doesnt load until Windows loads.

What this means is that if you can see the flipping during bootup and then the signal goes away completely in Windows - you have the cable connected correctly but your driver setting are incorrect.

Im confused here, ref that last question if your refering as to what measures you should do to stop the flipping of the screen during the POST and inital Windows XP screen then *nothing* - its normal and will always be that way. There is nothing you can do to stop it and it doesnt hurt anything, forget about it.

If it still doesnt work in Windows then its a driver issue.

Yeah, that's where it still flickers... so I'm guessing he just needs to upgrade his firmware or something...

Is there a refresh rate setting - on my ATI I just set it to TV and it started working but it sounds like an improper refresh rate to me.

Unplug any composite(RCA) video plugs from the back or front of your TV. Then go into your TV Settings Menu (on the TV not the Computer) and change the input setting for your AV or VideoIn (or something along those lines) to S-Video instead of Composite(RCA). - On some TV's there may be a physical switch in the back to go between S-Video and RCA instead of a menu option.
