Default 9800pro overheating??

Hey pimps and hoe's.. macetom has been begging me to ask ya'll about this one:

we have a 9800pro running on asus k8ne deluxe...
we left the apartment to go looking for a cheap cd burner in lakewood.. came to back no display on the moniter. Shruged it off and restarted it.

Started burning cd's when the comp froze and then the display went blank. macetom checked the temp of the vpu by touching the heatsink, and it was too hot to touch (I stupidly verified this).

So, any idea's, I haven't a clue.

hmmm, mine gets hot, but not too hot to touch...... well atleast we know the heatsink works lol.... maybe put a "home made fan card" in front of it to give it better airflow, sounds like maybe it isnt getting enough air to it and so its just sucking hot air back on to try to cool it

Take it off, clean off the TIM and apply AS3/AS5.

Default heat

Yeah I have a 9800Pro and it creates A LOT of heat. If i set graphic settings on high games like rollercoaster tycoon 3 and other games it creates so much heat. Its the hottest hardware on the pc....even my cpu 3.2ghz 800mhz fsb, 1mb cache prescott doesn't even create the heat that comes from the 9800Pro.

I am looking into a nice video card cooler for sure because I like to oc my graphics and even if I don't it still gets pretty hot. If the warranty is still on the video card you could see if you could replace it. If that is the problem.

i already told yall, the friggen heatsink is working if its THAT hot!! its the fan we are worrying about..... you could buy a new cooler for it if you want to fix it..... not always going to be fixable, but it could definately do it... i was thinking of cheapest things first

i have sufficient airflow 1 80s in the back, 1 side door 80, and one 80 in the front.......

i took the card out and it seems that the fan is scraping the top of the heatsink... is this normal. could this be the problem.

it shouldnt be scraping..... that would produce more heat (possibly melting the fan) and yea, well thats not normal to be scraping... it could have gotten so hot that the fan just melted..... i say get a new video cooler....

An ATI Silencer seems to be a good for price/performance, the stock coolers are usually crap and give out after awhile.

i have a 9800pro too it does run hot, even at idle like now. i hvae a tiny temp probe inbetween the shim and the heatsink and right now it is running at 55 c.

i requested the thermal threashold for the gpu from ati, but they wont give it out.

if you search the web there are quite a few sites that heve done tests that show that the new catalyst drivers cause the card to run at higher temps.

i have no clue why the fan would be scraping, but when i took mine apart for cleaning, i know it is atached with 3 little scruws, and i also know it maters what way the fan is put on.

also, did you buy the card retail? my dad bought a computer online, and orderd a 9800pro but it was actually a cheeper moddel which was flashed with a new bios. his has a cheeper hs than mine and his runs hot, you can tell the difference bc the cheep one has a black hs and has a floppy power connecter insted of molex.
