Default Radeon 9800 Pro Cooling Fan

Six weeks ago, I purchased a Radeon 9800 Pro. Since a few days, the card's cooling fan became rather noisy. It turned out that the part was broken and the complete card had to be replaced. The warranty guaranteed free of charge but can't say my confidence in this product is sky-high. Just bad luck or any similar experiences?

The stock coolers on video cards have had a high failure rate as far
as I can remember, your best bet is to go with an aftermarket cooler.

Zalman makes excellent aftermarket coolers, the ZM80D-HP & VF700 are my top picks.

Replace the whole card because of the cooling fan? Odd. Do you know what caused the noise?

Anyway, I know alot of people with this card and have never heard of this happening before, so I doubt you'll experience a repeat.

Also if it's just your cooling fan, I've got a spare from the 9800 that I killed a couple of weeks ago. If you just want to replace that instead of the whole card, let me know. Other than making mosfet-sinks I can't really find any use for it.

Or the complete lack therof, I am beginning to think that most stock installed
fans have no bearings and are simply directly attached to the motor.

Appreciate your offe but no need. According to the shop's technician, it's possible to replace the cooling fan only, but that appears to be a tedious job. I still had warranty so they gave me a new card. The problem was caused by faulty (worn?) bearings.

If it was me..........I'd replace the HSF with something better.......I know I'm going to (probably in a month or so as soon as I move into my new house at the end of this month)

You're getting owned by a guy who's single concern is charging
you as much as possible for the least challenging tasks...

The fan is extremely easy to remove and/or replace, far from tedious, you simply pull
the inner pins out of the two spring loaded clips on the cooler, and pull the cooler off.

Then you simply clean the core and new cooler with alcohol,
and apply paste to the core, then mount the new cooler.

Remember to remove the shim surrounding the GPU if you put
on an aftermarket cooler, or it will have core contact issues.

Bought off ebay
Volt-modded
Flashed BIOS
Massive epoxied ramsinks
Lost GPU shim
Semi-torn-off molex socket
Nipple rings

I think it wanted to die.

Is taking off the shim a must for all 9800s because I didn't take mine off and I THINK it is making good contact because I was able to push the core farther.

Yes, it's originally intended for the stock cooler only which has a raised base
that reaches below the shim's height to reach the core die surface. Remove it.
