Hi,

Can I use my current Gainward "Ultra/2100 Golden Sample Geforce 6800 128MB" graphics card on a new system that has a PCI Express motherboard ?

Well if it is an agp card then the motherboard would have to have an agp slot. If it's a pci express card then there should not be a problem.

Sorry, jaap, that's an AGP card (linky). As CJ said, no such luck using it with PCI-E.

Default PCI Express question

Bummer

I want to buy this system :

http://www.meshcomputers.com/updated/elite_xa2.htm

but without the card that comes with it so I can save some cash.

Is the card in the sytem above, the 128MB nVIDIA GeForce FX 6600 GT PCI Express, better than the card I have already, my GT6800 ?

Thanks

You could buy that same system, in parts and assemble it yourself ...probably still come out cheaper...

I'm getting the to give me a quote without the monitor, speakers, sound card, keyboard and mouse as i already have all those......

currently have a P4 2.66 ghz with the GT6800 graphics card. Will the MESH system be a large improvement on this ?

In a word, no.

Dude, the system you got sounds like it's pretty bangin' as it is...might just want to look into a CPU or memory upgrade instead...save you a helluvalotta cash...

What's the specs on your surrent system? (mobo, HD, RAM...)

mobo : Gigabyte GA-8SIMLH
1GB ram
2 HDD, 80gb and 160gb Seagate barracuda

problem is the mobo has hit the wall processor upgrade wise, i can only go up to a P4-Northwood 3.06G (HT)

http://www.giga-byte.com/Motherboard...Rev%204.0).htm

any ideas ? new mobo, cpu and ram only necessary ? should i get a RAID setup for the HDD's ? how much of an advantage is RAID ?

no offence, but considering you dont know one video card form another , I think it wise we just KISS (keep it simple, stupid!), and get with the easy stuff. A new motherboard should see you in good stead, Id recomend you go for a 800MHz HT chipset (theres a particularly good 8** chipset) and a northwood core. Asus seems to have the upper hand for Intel 478 boards.

Consider raid when your more assertive on you hardware. Welcome to PR by the way We all learn.

Dude, I would totally keep your existing system, and just upgrade the motherboard for now...a nice IC7-G should do you well.

If you've got the ca$h flow, look into some new memory and a new processor...that board will be able to handle any processor out there, unless it's a socket-T.

If you want a board that's socket-T, but has AGP, then look into the DFI boards. They'll do you just fine.

I think you'd have a helluva time finding 1MB RAM...

Where are you from? US, UK or Canada?

I would do this:

Intel 550 Socket-T CPU (3.4GHz)

DFI Lanparty UT 865PE-T Motherboard

1GB of your favourite brand low latency OC RAM (Corsair, Ultra etc.)

By using the socket-T CPU you can use it in a future motherboard upgrade, yet still use your cirrent kick-ass video card. There is no real performance advantage moving to PCI-E and DDR2 right now...in fact, a highly overclocked DDR platform will outperform an overclocked DDR2 platform just because of the higher latencies of DDR2.

It's always cheaper to do it yourself...if you do go the socket-T route, make sure you read the instructions before installing the processor...motherboard warranties don't cover bent pins in the socket. (The pins are in the socket, not on the chip with the socket-T motherboards)

You could get this mobo and have more upgrade options.
But from what I heer the apg slot is just a a weird pci slot
and runs slightly slower than agp 8x but there is almost no
real proformace differece in games and such.

Well, judging by logistics.. True AGP-E8X should be equivalent to PCI-E32X.
