Some can. Not all though. And since you bumped the thread, I would recommend the X800 XL when it becomes available (in like a few weeks). 6800GT performance for $299.

Just thought i would let ya know that my PNY 6800 is a great card for the price I got. But it's so freaking long that it covers the IDE 2 channel of the motherboard (nf7-s) and I can't get a cable in there without it seating incorrectly. . Something you might think about in your decision. I'm not sure if all the 6800's are like this or if it's the 6800's from PNY. But I sure do miss my DVD drive and Im thinking about getting something else just for this problem.

| Warcraft Warrior | From the slot on the back of my case to the front of the card, my BFG 6800 GT OC measures 9 inches in overall length (yeah, this sucker is loooong). Another inch, or so, and it would completely span the width of my mobo! Fortunately, it doesn't interfere with any of my gear (my ide, floppy, and power connections are on the upper right side of my mobo). FU3L...if you can wait, i second gorked's opinion: see what the x800xl offers before making a purchase (and whether or not ATI is actually able to supply them ).

| Apex Techie II | This may be a bit late, but I just ordered a Gigabyte 6800 GT, after watching my friends 6800 regular maintain some wicked temps. with the amazing passive-cooling it nets from that huge heatsink/pipes. It also seems on alot of review sites that 6800 GT benchs higher than x800 in a few areas, and is generally suggested over the x800. My .02 cents /shrug\ |

| Apex Tech Maniac Supreme | Why bother? The only differnece between U and GT is voltage and ram timings. You cant change the ram timings by flashing anyway, and if your card is stable at ultra speeds (most, including mine, are stable past them) then what's the point? I'd rather keep my lifetime warranty. Fuel, I was in your situation about 2 months ago. I was either going to get an x800pro and mod it, or a gt. since the mod isnt garuanteed and even if it works theres a good chance your card will die, I went with the GT wich usually outperforms the xt for about $50 more than an x800pro. (the bfg is more expensive than other gt's, but well worth it imo.) HL2? Yeah the gt will do excelent. I get 50-130fps in hl2dm and cs:source, at 1680x1050(widescreen) with everything up and aa/af maxed. Not to shabby for an older cpu like mine. If you're more comfortable with ATI, then you might want to go with the x800. Be warned though, if you're going to mod it i found out many people had problems with them dying, and since theres no warranty, you're out $400. I plan on keeping this card for at least 3 years so I needed long term reliability (annother reason i went with bfg, lifetime warranty.) I used to be an ATI guy too. (rage>r100>r200) |

| Apex Master Tech Apprentice | I've been an ATI guy since the beginning witth the original rage's etc.... Tonight i ordered the eVGA 6800gt and am gonna run it stock for a bit until i get my vga silencer 5 on over here (lack of 30 bucks). This thread depicts my hardest choice in the computing world for me, ATI or nvidia. penny for penny and fps for fps the GT wins so i had to do it. Also it may be watercooled soon so we'll see how it OC's ![]() Has anyone used that 6800 waterblock from DD yet? i believe ive heard good things from it but i cant remember. DD has to be my favorite company, their attention to detail is impeccable. Go GT |

| Rubber Duck-Hoe | I would say 6800 series based pretty much on the fact of SLI upgradability. If something comes out thats twice as fast as your 6800, just pop another one in thats now on the cheap, and you're good to go for another year. Plus, I personally think that ATI's drivers / software sucks, but maybe thats just me. I have an ATI AIW 9800 Pro, so for those of you that think I'm pulling that out of my butt, I'm going from experience here. |

I was asking because the 6600 costs less than the 9800 on newegg by a good bit. I'm looking for a new card, I currently have an All-in-wonder 9800 pro & I want to buy a new card. I'm hesitant though,to buy a new card because that means I'd have to try to sell the 9800 & nobody's really in the market for it, I suppose.

| Hoe-lier than Thou | The short answer is that the 6600 and X700 series are better than the 9800 series. The long answer is that the newer cards are better in the newer (DX9) games. In older games (UT2k4, CoD) the 9800 will be about equal to the newer cards, they go back and forth depending upon the games. In Doom 3 the 6600 blows the 9800 out of the water, however because of a few factors HL2 is a different story; the way HL2 is coded it favors ATI's arcitecture and since the R4x0 cards are essentailly r360's with xtra pipes and better clocks the 9800 is really just a scaled back X700 (which is a scaled back X800 etc..) so in HL2 the 9800 actually performs about the same as the 6600 series. However I would reccomend the 6600 series because they are equal to the 9800's in some areas but if there is any difference it is in favor of the newer cards. |

| Apex Tech Maniac Supreme | yeah, you will. 1 recommendation however: with a 256mb card you're going to eat up half of your system ram by mirroring your gfx card. I wouldnt recommend less (or more) than 1gb. with that. its easy to slide with 512 on a 64mb card, but you'll notice some performance drop with a 256. |
