Default Radeon 7500?

Looking for a video card for my dad, and, on paper at least, the Radeon 7500 looks perfect for him. He doesn't care about 3D performance, wants hardware DVD decoding (he's got a P3-500), would like a DVI connector for a future flat-panel monitor. But of course I've heard ATI cards have had some driver & support problems, etc. I know several of you out there (chiquita for one) have a 7500; what have your experiences with it been? Thanks in advance for any insight or advice!

Here's the one he's looking at

A review that makes it sound pretty good

Solid card, the drivers are mature for it, they won't change much.

But it is at the end of it's life cycle so it's a toss-up. A newer card that has life through DX9 may be a better choice.

Of course if it lasts him through a year, it was still an inexpensive choice and the others will only get cheaper so there is small risk.

Hey man, I use that card in my other rig. I had it in my current rig for a few months and it worked fine then, and it still works fine. Haven't had any troubles with the drivers.

DVI connector is there, I was always thinking of getting an adapter for that so I can hook up another crt, cause for some reason my card didn't come with the adapter, not sure if it was supposed to or not.

But all-in-all, very good card in my opinion. I haven't played too many games with it though, the most was WarCraft III, Empire Earth, and sims.

Good luck

Yeah, most problems I'd heard of were with the latest-and-greatest ATI cards, not the 7500. Just wanted to make sure.

Thanks guys; I'll go ahead with it!

The biggest difference between the 7500 and 8500 is the lack of Graphix extras like per-pixel shaders and that kind of high end visual stuff.

The raw performance of the card is still very close.
