Default Dead video card?

I have/had a MSI Geforce FX 5900xt and it seems to just have died on me. I was playing Counter-Strike source. The game just froze so I hit the reset button. After reset the fan on the video card started to spin up and then just stopped. No video was going to the monitor.

Specs
P4P800 mobo
2.6c 800fsb P4
512x2 PC3200 ram
(dead) Geforce FX 5900xt

Please help and ask any questions you need.

P.S. No overclocking has been done.

Do you have another video card you could put into your machine? If you put another one in there and it works then you know can pinpoint the video card as the culprit. Then again, it might be best to just reseat the video card before you try that ::shrug::

I actually pulled a video card from a different computer and put it in mine and it running fine. After that I put the GeforceFX5900 back and back to the same problem.

In that case then it would seem your 5900 is what's causing the problem. As for remedies I personally don't know of anything you could do unless your card is new, in which case you could pull in for an RMA or exchange at the store or it's under warranty. Hopefully someone else has some ideas for you

Oh yeah. I forgot to mention that this is actually the second card. When I first bought it back in february it arrived dead. I called Accupc.com and they replaced the card free of charge and now 9 months later it's dead. Probably not going to be dealing with msi again anytime soon.

Thumbs up Warranty info

Your card should still be under warranty. You will have to pay to ship it to them, but it's cheaper than buying a new card. http://www.msicomputer.com/support/sup_genwar.asp

Well my card randomly started working again. After being tested in different computers and not working. Should i still send it into msi for then to check it out? I already completed the rma request form.

Yes, most definitely RMA it. I bet it has a 1 year warranty. I just went through a similar experience.

Be sure to write up your experience with the RMA and post it on that thread.

Try stress testing it. Maybe you have a heat problem. Take off the heatsink, and re-apply some thermal compound and make sure it's making good contact. Blow out the fins of the heatsink too.

I played CS source for abou an hour and the stress test was still where it was before i started playing(70fps) The test doesnt put the card through enought stress.

Dont pay attention to the last post. As i was typing another post about how i already got the rma number my video card turned off. The computer was still running. I reset the computer and i was back to the same problem. Definately time to rma. i was actually playing cs for about 1 hour and ran the stress test twice. I ll make sure to include a note of what happens to the cardand put in the shipping box just to let msi know what to check out because when they put in their test system it could work perfectly fine and then they will send it back without doing anything.

nothing more agervating than a piece of computer hardware that is random in when it works. you'll have it fine for one second than the next its screwed. Do you have it OC's the 5900xt's are some of the best OC'ers but, if you have it up to high maybe that is the problem, try clocking it down. and if you dont have it oc'd then RMA it.

I had a Leadtek GF4TI4600Ultra that died on me. I never OC'd it, there was never anything wrong with it, and I wasn't using it for gaming at the time. Sometimes cards just die. It pissed me off so much, I almost cried... almost.

Its probaly a heat issue but i dont to risk taking the heatsink off and voideing the warranty. I wil include a note about how it might work once they put it in the test system but it fails after a litle time of use. After the first time it failed i let the card sit on teh table and about an hour later i tried the card before i was going to package it and get it ready for shipping and then it worked but it failed about an hour later again. The card was not overclocked at all either.

Man, i'm sorry to hear about your cards failure. What you clearly said in the last post is typical of a dying video card, you say the warranty is still intact. Use it.

Im definately using it since i figured a have a little bit over 2 years of warranty still left. I'll ship it either today or tommorow. I'll make sure to get back to everyone about how it turns out.

EDIT: MSI is finnally going to ship my card this week. One thing that sucks is that they are going to use ground shipping from California to Michigan. That will take a while.

I got my card back from MSI on the 16. They gave a me a brand new card but I'm still trying to make up my mind on whether I want to sell it or not to get something better.

Could I get at least $160 off the card on ebay or should I just hold on to it and get a new card with CPU and mobo later on?

EDIT: My old card had Hynix 2.5 ns chips and this one has some kind of samsung chips. Which on is better for OC'ing?
