Default Voodoo 5500 Mod!!!!

Check out this beauty. After scoring some Loctite 384 Thermal Epoxy, I have been a bit creative with my 3dfx cards.

This thread is actually 3 mods, but centered about my Voodoo 5. I used some trick Radio Shack 1.3 GHz heatsinks to cool off this beast. Yes, I know, RS sucks, but these heatsinks are the only ones that will clear the caps. I also had to mod the fan connector on the 2nd GPU so the heatsink was centered properly over the GPU. Temps have dropped tremenously, from 160*F to about 110*F and 125*F when gaming. The fans plug into a Y-splitter which plugs into a single fan header on the mobo. Look for this one and the other two in the galleries!!!

Here's my new Voodoo 3000 mod. The first one died for some reason. I still don't know why but I'm guessing ESD. This card is not any V 3000, but one of the final revisions before 3dfx went bankrupt. The memory chips are dated '0026', year 2000, week 26 and as you know 3dfx closed it's doors in Dec. 2000. The original silver heatsink was epoxied on, as opposed to using metal clips, a sign of attempts to cut costs in the production facility.

Again, Loctite 384 and the original P3 cooler off the last card. Micron memory version.

The card in the first pic on the right is my Voodoo 3 1000 mod.

Here is the Voodoo 3 1000, sometimes referred to as the Velocity 200. The difference between the two is the Voodoo has the extra 2 TMU's enabled, while the Velocity doesnt. Think of it as the 9700 Pro. Clocked lower than the Velocity 200, but with more features enabled. The Voodoo 3 1000 has a clock speed of 125 MHz while the Velocity has a clock speed of 147 MHz but with the 2 TMU's disabled it kills benchmarks. A simple BIOS flash to Voodoo 3 1000 enables the TMU's.

Loctite 384 TE, and a Super Socket 7 cooler keep the temps on this card in the 90's to 100's. This card previously had no heatsink at all, and burned your finger just to touch it. Now it's just kinda warm to the touch.

I would use a stock AMD HSF on my FX5200, but it would still be a piece of dung.

I need to get pix of the Voodoo 3 2000 PCI I modded for my Dell so it wouldn't heat up the inside of the case.

I would have thought a collecter of really old video cards would keep the stock heatsink on.

5500's arent that rare. They're all over the place on eBay. Now if it had been a Voodoo 5 6000 revision 3700 then things would have been a bit different.

Excellent work on the mods.

I missed out on a lot of hardware development as I only got into computers a few years ago, and built my first rig about 2 years ago, so I can't "reminisce" about classic hardware. Besides the novelty of running older gear, what's so great about Voodoo cards anyway? As far as I can tell, the performance level must be about on par with a Radeon 7000, a $30 card, and there's much better onboard graphics available than even that. I mean no offense J-Dogg, but I'd like to hear in your own words what you like about them.

I really don't know what I think about these. it's definately cool, but I don't know if the cool comes from doing that to Voodoos or the gerryrigging involved. Whatever, it's definately a great accomplishment!

Well, many people have asked why I mod the older Voodoos....

One, they are awesome cards if you play a lot of older games like Halflife and CS, it's so cool seeing the 3dfx Splash logo animation on my Voodoo 3 every time i initialize Glide mode in HL. It's like 1999 all over again.

Another reason is functionality. These cards get real hot. I have some folding rigs that use these cards. That was the biggest drawback to the 3dfx cards was their heat output. Now that they run cooler I can make good use of them and not have to worry about burning up my card or anything else inside the case for that matter.

Best thing of all is all the []D [] []\/[] []D juice the modded Voodoo 5 has, I'm bringing two rigs to the next LAN, one for Halflife so i can bling dat Voodoo 5 and one for everything else
