| Apex Tech God | All right so I am overclocking with my 9600XT, my temps are idle 39 load 45, so what ever.. So I get bored today and decide to see what is under the heatsink, what this company (Celistica) is using for a heat tranfer compound. Low and behold there is a thermal pad Not only is it a thermal pad but after taking off the HSF its only in contact with about 60% of the core. So I take that off with some nail polish remover and lap it with sandpaper. I was out of AC3 so I used some generic white thermalpast I found in my closet. After cleaning and re-aplying everything I put the very small HSF back on the card. When I get into window the overdrive utilty is showing 29 degrees!! thats a 10 degree drop in temperature without going out and buying some flashy led fan. Hope this helps, check your video cards guys..

| Mystical Schwinn Guru | Arrrrgh, there's frag tape on my Voodoo 3 3000, no wonder the f*ckers get so hot....... And my Voodoo 3 2000 PCI I just traded some hardware for has an epoxied heatsink but it's only contacting like 50 percent of the card and the core is not in that 50 percent |

When ya get some good TIM in there you'll see even higher O/C's. The older cores, the ones shimed around the DIE, 97 and 9800's? The H/S's never even touched the Die. Ya had to peel the shim to get good contact . Good to see others paying attention to the details...that's what gives ya that special edge in tunning. |

I wouldnt TEAR anything hahahaha... but gently pry it off yeah I would.....However note this...the waterblock is heavy...the tiny resistors that surround the core on the die of that chip come off very easily.....extra caution should be taken to prevent crushing or knocking them off...SERIOUS CARE NEEDED........ dont say I didnt warn you.Digi

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I gently removed 5 of them now. Although not nessasary,I do so when I hard mount the the H/S or maze4 GPU block. I can see if it is absolutly level that way... My a98pro is a rainbow from the torque on the block, but I don't use the stock hardware... Digi called it right, BE CAREFUL, or you'll be stacking redboards to the tune of $250ea and up... |

removing the shim is NOT needed for the Maze 4 gpu block. The base of the block has been designed to drop down and around the raised shim on the ATI 9700 and up seires cards.

did you get a brace block for the backside of the vid card, this helps prevent the "rainbow" when installing the block.

Aaah no? brace block? sounds healthier than the rainbow method...I was lucky to find #4/40 screws in stainless 3bux a piece I was ganked for them... Ace ain't the place for 4/40's Pirate bastards.. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
