Default GF4 Ti 4200 64mb - Good budget Card for not-too-hardcore gamer?

Im lookin to replace my Powercolor Radeon 7500 64mb PCI with somethin now that I have an AGP slot..Ive heard the ti 4200 64mb is a good budget card, and I looked on tomshardware and it did good in the tests..so is this a nice card to get if I know where to get one for around $70?
oh and i need to know if it will work with my M7VIG-Pro, Im not sure if the AGP slot is 2.0 or 3.0
thanks
-Jesse

Although I wouldnt buy last generation hardware like the Ti4200 at this day and age, here you are:
MSI GF4 Ti 4200 64MB - $69

Your board has a AGP 4x slot which is Version 2.0.

But, it is a great card .......... and will beat anything current that retails up to about $140.

yeah in a recent tomshardware review of like 40 video cards
http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic...229/index.html
the ti 4200 benchmarked up around the 9600, Fx 5600, and other higher cost cards
It also had THE best FBucks value of all the cards (FPS/$), next after the Ti4200 was Ti4600.
For only $70, It looks like a nice card to me

But you dont have directx 9 ... and sadly that what allll games use now are will use so you miss out on that i guess. Also the ti cards take big perfomance hit when AA and AF are enabled.:0

wait wait this may be a dumb question but...
can you still play directx 9.0 games with an 8.1 card at lower quality?
or will 9.0 games not run at all on an 8.1 card

One of my kids are online now fragging the crap out of the enemy on HALO using a Gainward Ti 4200. Gameplay seems to be smooth as silk. Yes, there isn't DX9 capability, but that contingency has already been written into the game code.

I know others have said this but I'll echo their opinions;

the ti4200 is a great card for DX 8.1 games, basically everything from yesterday...

the problem is now everything requiers DX 9.0 and the ti4200 can't do DX9...

In that light I'd highly reccomend spending the extra $$$ on a Radeon 9600 Pro, the XT model is also a good option but unless you want to push the card as far as possible the Pro is good enough, plues its about $20-30 cheaper. The 9600 will perform AWESOME in todays games and its numbers in DX9 are nothing to laugh at (hello FX5200...) for the nVidia fanboy the FX5700 Ultra also has become a good card

I'll give Arkangyl a reputation point for that recommendation. He's correct, the 9600 Pro is probably the best option out there right now. However, the newer 5900's are also kicking butt. Buy the one with the best features at the best price.

I will further support the recommendation for the 9600 Pro.

However, if your budget is sub $120 ......... the TI4200 is the best option IMHO.

I don't know Put, consider that every NEW game release requiers DX9 I think that the 4200 would be a letdown. I'm not dissin its performance but you can't get performace if the games won't run... that said it would be worth the extra time to save the extra money to get the 9600 series because I know that in a few months your kicking yourself because all the current and new games won't play...

...A Radeon 9600 Pro won't do much good since his motherboard chipset is a VIA 266. Just a thought.

I would agree about the 9600 pro being better buy than the ti4200.It al depends on your budget..If yo ucan afford 200 then I woudl suggest the 9600 pro. .230 i would suggest 9700 pro.@90 I would suggest 9800 pro..Anythign below 150 I would suggest the TI4200..

That is all I am saying, and all I ever said, it is the top card for under $150.

Is a 9600 a better card? Of course!

Is the 9600 a smarter buy? Probably.

Can you get it for $79?

Putwig, I totally agree. The GeForce4Ti4200 with 64mb of ram is pretty darn sweet, and cheap.

But, I would have to agree with the 9600 reccomendation. If you're gonna get something nowadays, you should get something set for the next gen of games. Plus, you get HL2 with it

Right, got a little off track there.

In his current system the ti4200 is the better choice, hands down... It's price is superb and unless you can use AGP 8x and have a system that is, well, a little faster overall, the 9600 Pro won't be able to show it power.

that said; get the ti 4200 if you don't plan on upgrading your mobo and proc for a while (until PCI-X) if you are considering a new mobo and processor (something to tide you over until PCI-X) then get the 9600 Pro

I have a 9600 pro and it kicks ass. It overclocks great, and palys everygame i own at full settings, and 10x7 rez. If you got 130-150 go with 9600 pro. Anything below that go for the 9600 np or ti4200
