Default Question about PCI-E 2.0

If I understand correctly, PCI-E 2.0 supports full 16x speed? I was looking at the 8800GT's and noticed this, and was wondering what it really is, and are there any motherboards that support these cards yet. I was looking on the net but didn't find a board with PCI-E 2.0, will a existing mobo with 16x run these cards?

Thanks.

I think that the X38 chip supports PCI-E....

Edit: yeah this one got it:
Asus Maximus Formula Special Edition Socket 775 ATX Motherboard Products Model: MB77ASMAXIMUS [MB77ASMAXIMUS] : Performance-PCs.com, ... sleeve it and they will come

Its backwards and forward compatible (To an extent) and yes there are boards out that support it now..X-38 chipsets do.

Let me get u some links.

EDIT..there were no replies when i started mine..lol

Anyways..they didn't answer the PCIE 2.0 "What is it" portion.

Quote:
PCIe 2.0 itself offers double the speed of the original spec. This means pairing a x16 PCIe 2.0 GPU with a x16 electrical PCIe 2.0 slot on a motherboard will offer 8GB/sec of bandwidth upstream and downstream (16GB/sec total bandwidth)

More details here:
AnandTech: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT: The Only Card That Matters

One "Big" advantage..is that it allows more power to the video card than PCIE 1.0..I think that was limited to 75 watt..wich means that most midrange- high end cards needed an external connector...I think the new spec is 100 watts or so, couldn't find it in that article..but I have seen it elsewhere. That means more cards can do without those extra power connectors..and high end cards can get buy wth less of them...the 2900XT needed a 6 pin AND an 8 pin!

Ahh, very nice :] That was one of the main reasons I despise the new Radeons. Maybe soon they will actualy give nVidia a competetion

Sorry for the ATI fanboys out there, you know its true

November the 19th...

AMD HD3800 clocks bring prices down - VR-Zone IT & Lifestyle Forum!

$199 is crazy for a high-end part! If it outperforms the 8800GT I am so getting one.

Yo.

Biatch.

You live in Melbourne? I live in West Melbourne, off Orange Grove, holla at a playa sometime.

Now here is my question, if I get an X-38, or the new X-48 coming out, if I buy a PCI-E 2.0 card with external connectors and plug it into a 2.0 100w slot, and don't plug in the connectors, will the card still bitch at me? Kinda like the old 9800's if you didn't plug in the connector it would ask you to on the screen haha.

After doing a bit more research (Was kinda busy at the time of my first reply)

Here is the low down on the PCIE-2.0 "Power specs" and it is realy good news, better than I had thought!

It apears the new spec allows for up to a heart stopping 225~300 watts of go go juice!

FYI: PCIE 1 allowed for a max of 150 watts.

With ATI and NVIDA going through some healthy power reductions via a die shrink (ATI is doing 55NM with the new gen cards, don't know NVIDIA's plan of the top of my head) this should allow for pretty much all new cards to do away with the extra power connectors to the card itself, unless they use Dual GPU's or something extremely power hungry based on the current 80-90NM parts.

A new 2x4 power connector is required to plug into the motherboard to supply that extra 150 watts of power however, so you will need an adaptor for an older PSU to work.

Here is a link to the PCI SIG website FAQ (The guys who make the standards) for more information.

PCI-SIG - FAQ - PCI Express 2.0

So to answer your question J-Dogg, the extra power connector that will be "Bitched" about having to be connected would be on the motherboard I would think...only time will tell since this hardware is just starting to trickle out the door in the midrange only for vid cards at this time, and the X-38 is the only motherboard in retail that supports it at this time.

For more detailed info on the "Guts" of PCIE in general, Wikipdeia has all the infor you would ever want to know, with a section on PCIE 2.0, and PCIE 3.0 wich should be available towards the end of 2009 or early 2010

that is exceptional news indeed!

When I finally make the transition to PCI, it'll be to a 2.0 board. As it is, I'm still running AGP (yes, I know, old tech -- But you know what? AMD/ATi HD 38xx boards are being released AGP!)

Well now, they just wont let AGP die. Man oh man, nVidia doesnt seem to do anything about it sadly. I guess ATI has AGP while the big N has PCI-E to dominate.

And yes j-dogg, we have met in the past, you just probrably dont remember. The last time I saw you, you were smashing old Pentiums up to get the cores, for some reason I do not know but it looked fun
