| I want to buy a new video card soon but i don't know if i should buy a 8800GTX or wait for the Geforce 9 which should come out near november 2007. The money is not a problem but i heard that the Geforce 9 should be two times better than the Geforce 8 with more DX10 stability... I heard that the Geforce 8 will downprice in a few mounths but im not sure about this. To resume, what should i buy: Geforce 8 or 9. | ||

I can't see G90 coming out this year when ATi's HD2900 was only released last month. It's true that nVidia usually launch a new architecture around winter-time, but there are no rumours flying about yet and the 8-series seems to have a lot of life left in it. There is going to be a whole raft of amazing games coming out this winter; Bioshock, Crysis, UT3, CoH: Opposing Fronts etc. and do you want to be stuck waiting for G90 to be released while everyone else is playing these awesome games? That's the thing with PCs, you can wait forever for the best technology at the best price. If I were you, I'd just bite the bullet and get a 320mb 8800GTS right now. That's what I've got, and it tears everything to pieces, even at 1680x1050. Then when G90 comes along, you can sell your 8800GTS and get a better card. This way, you'll be well prepared for new games. G80 will be due a price drop/range reshuffle soon, as the 8900-series will be released to counter ATi's HD2950-series...so you could wait till then...but it really depends what you're interested in playing now...and if you want cutting edge DX9 performance and future-proofing for DX10, buying now is the best choice IMO.

| I agree with you, i post this thread because people told me to wait until new cards but i think if i wait, i'll wait forever so maybe i'll buy a 8800 GTX 768MB when the prices will dump a bit. I'm not sure but i heard that the prices will go down near the end of summer(north America)in two mounths. | ||

I am also hoping they do come down as i am also looking at getting the 8800GTX 768MB,but i am also looking at getting this bad boy also 8800 GTX Ultra 768MB, but the price is just to insane for me right now, i am hoping to get one of these cards in the next 2 months, if my finances will allow me too.

Yeah, you can pretty much count on that one. nVidia hate being usurped. I question how they're going to do it though; the 7950GX2 required the use of mobile cores as the desktop ones were just too power-hungry and hot. nVidia can't seem to get the mobile 8800 series out of the door at all at the moment, so an 8950GX2 may come with a instruction book telling you to hook it up to your fridge or something. but when geforce 9 comes out if you wait another year then geforce 10 will come out. its a game. right now there are few games that use direct x 10. i would pick up a 8800gts for 300$. if you are still on xp., xp will not have dx10 support keep that in mind.

| Looking for clarification here, so does the 8800 support Direct X 10, IÂ’m looking to upgrade from a FX 5200 ultra and I donÂ’t want to by another card in a year just after spending $700 bucks on a 8800 XXX. Specifically for UT 2k7 (UT3 whatever kiss off epic), Crysis, and BioShock. Not to mention what is the final verdict is it possible to run Direct X10 on XP or is it vista only; IÂ’ve heard the argument go both ways. It really sucks that Microsoft is putting all its eggs in one basket; a basket with a paper bottom mind you. I personally would rather cut off my foot off with a chainsaw then switch to crappy Vista. What about Direct X10 on Linux, how the hell do you run games on Linux do you need different drivers. | ||

Yes the 8800 will support DX 10. It should be able to play all of the games you mentioned without a problem. In fact I believe IGN ran a story from one of the Crysis developers that showed Crysis running with everything maxxed out at 2056*1600 with an 8800 and unknown intel processor. However you can expect the preformance from a G92 to be much better. And yes for DX10 you need Vista. And there's no way you'll be able to run it on Linux. There's no wiggle room there. Honestly Vista isn't that bad at all. There's a little bit of a preformance drop, and there bugs and incompatabilites, but for the most part Nvidia's drivers are getting better and by the time UT3 comes out they oughta be pretty solid.

Yeah, I wouldn't go that far but I don't like it either. I ran it for a month, and I hated how slow it was to shutdown, how a lot of my apps didn't work properly, and how it would fail to hibernate every time I told it to. M$ has their work cut out, and I'm sticking with XP for as long as possible. Once you get over the eye-candy that Vista has, there's really very little substance behind it.

there is a project to port DX10 to xp, but it is not microsoft supported... and its still in its infancy stages..

Ya I herd a little about that, here's to hopping that M$ dosn't stomp on it with its gient bag o money. With that said Alexthemaster I would just get an 8800. Even if the 89 comes out at the end of the year thats almost a half a year of waiting and no games are even going to be pushing the 8800 so i don't think its worth the money right away or the downtime of waiting for the card. But thats my opinion.

let hope they do a better job this time around even though the x1950pro DUAL came out like a year late, it was still over twice the performance of the 7950GX2

I'm quite looking forward to a card like this, they perform so well. I have a 7900GX2 (not 7950GX2, 7900GX2 was the original OEM version) and it was pretty amazing in the few tests that I ran. It's a shame that it doesn't work properly in my Aopen.
