I think its a good idea that you buy vista with a geforce 8 (DX10), that's what i'll do.

Specifically for UT 2k7 (UT3 whatever kiss off epic), Crysis, and BioShock. Not to mention what is the final verdict is it possible to run Direct X10 on XP or is it vista only; I’ve heard the argument go both ways. It really sucks that Microsoft is putting all its eggs in one basket; a basket with a paper bottom mind you.
I personally would rather cut off my foot off with a chainsaw then switch to crappy Vista.
What about Direct X10 on Linux, how the hell do you run games on Linux do you need different drivers.

Just want to point out that 8800s are much more nicely priced than what you seem to think. 320mb GTSes usually average around $300, which puts it right in the same ballpark as the similarly performing with less image quality 7950gx2.

The drivers are an issue though. From searching on the internet, it seems like there's a lot of bugs for the 8800 GTS in linux. But hey, it doesn't really work in vista either!

I'm hearing that Vista is too buggy and a resource hog right now.........I'll wait until a 2nd revision comes out (remember Win98 days).

Resource hog = yes

Buggy = not really

I've had very few problems with Vista, only X-Fi drivers for Vista not allowing for the old console

Regarding resources and Vista's need to hog them all - if you get yourself an E6600 and 4GB RAM on x64 it'll run beautifully. Though 2GB is definitely comfortable.

As fars as graphics cards, there's no point in waiting. It's always a game of waiting, and there will ALWAYS be people telling you "Oh such and such is due for release in a couple months, wait for that", because there will always be something new awaiting release just round the corner. Better to buy what's best at the moment, then upgrade when it's no longer good enough for you.

When I got my 8800GTX 4 or 5 months ago I had people telling me not to waste my money, and to wait for the second generation of DX10 cards, yet to this day there is nothing the 8800GTX cannot do. Every game I throw at it runs beautifullly on the highest settings, and as has already been said, Crysis was reportedly run on a single 8800GTX at E3 or whatever... that should be enough reassurance.

I guess get whatever you can afford, but if you've an equal money:sense ratio, you'll see that the Ultras are a little too expensive for the marginal performance increase and the GTS/320mb is not really enough for high end gaming on max settings.

You'll definitely notice a difference. It really is the sweet spot.
