Unhappy Radeon 9800 Pro problem sometimes...

...after installing software that requires a reboot for the installation to complete. I just received my new Power Color 9800 Pro and I have experiences screen output degredation on a few occassions: (not in any particular order) after installing the 3.8 drivers, windows updates, and just today when I installed TDK Mixmaster. The problem dissappears after another reboot, but I am wondering if anyone else is having this same issue with their 9600's/9800's. Is the an RMA issue for the card?

I will post some pics ASAP so you can see what I'm talking about.

FeRaL,
What has worked for me, is to uninstall all ATI drivers, reboot,
re-install,
BUT...
don't reboot untill everything ATI, is installed, that got my ATI card right in the past.
Don't know if that's how you're going about it, but I was ready to toss a 9500 because I was rebooting after every prompt like directed. Had something to do with mixing the drivers, instead of getting the whole package...
Good Luck Brah...how's the rheobus look...Pimp?

That was happening to me with the new 3.8 drivers, and games started to crash saying that it had to use a VPU recover to bring the VPU back from serious errors. When i can post I will explain more on this and what games it happens on.

same things happened to me.
ive got distortion across my screen, and it also tends to crash after a bit.

but the strange thing is i ran my 9800se for almost a month before this happened.

ive done a complete clean install of everything, and i dint get any problems untill i installed the display drivers.
i have since updated to the latest drivers to no avail.

am wondering if this is a windows conflict, did i download a patch that is conflicting with the drivers, i duno.

but im flashing the bios tonight so we shall see if that helps at all.

hmmmmm one of the 3 manufactures of 9800se is powercolor, if timaynz has a power color also it could be that they choose low quaility parts.

ya it is a powercolor.
i see tht they have XP drivers for the 9800se but i cant get my computer to run long enough to download them.

i got the latest ATI drivers last night and it seemed to make it worse.

i had my comp in the shop for 5 days and they couldnt find anything wrong.
or fix it.

didnt help tht the guy had limited english.
got a little worried when he asked me what an error message ment.

but i realy dont get why it decided last friday that it would **** itself??
i hadnt loaded anything new so where did the confict come from??

I'm getting the Sapphire Radeon 9800PRO OEM on Friday if shipping goes okay. It is on sale at NewEgg for $301. I'll let you know if I have any problems.

rma?? wats this?

anything thats gonna save me from flashing my bios.
which is 1 of the things windows sugests to help.

save tht give up and put my gforce 2 back in.

my motherboard runs a nforce2 chipset, could the multimedia drivers be conflicting. or maybe a nasty little bit of spite against ati chipsets frm nvidia?

Well, I decided to do a fresh system install. Reinstalled WinXP Pro and the card still has the same display problem. It did it a total of 4 times. The fist time was when I installed the drivers that came with the card on CD and it needed to reboot to complete. Second was when I downloaded some Windows Critial Updates and rebooted. Third, when I updated Windows Media Player and rebooted. Fourth was when I installed Norton Ghost. I'm not going to do any further installs, it's RMA time for this puppy.

fouind a fix WOOPIE!!!

no more **** across the screen!!!

right

go to display properties
settings
advanced
trouble shooting
uncheck the "enable write combining" box that is highlighted

and the display acts like normal

all be it a little slower, but not much.
just tweak ur bios settings.

this has seemed to have solved the problem untill microsft or ATi come up with more compatible drivers anyhow.

its a small fix i guess but you didnt dish out the big bucks for a "slower" VPU you want every iota of processing power that puppy has to offer!

I played some CS but i just wasnt the same.

so the cards gone back to the shop and they gonna fix it
or
give me a new one. perhaps an upgrade to a 9800 non pro?
then a quick bios flash.

Install the 3.7 drivers. That should fix it, though I'm running 3.8 drivers on my 9000 and haven't had any problems yet except for jumpy framerate in OpenGL mode in HL, and it only does it in HL.
