Default P4 CPU fan zip-tied to back of GPU mod

Hi all I guess this thread goes under the title of 'a tip for video OC' or something.

So yesterday I was bored and while dusting my PC decided to try and attach another fan to the back of my 6800GE card as I have been intrigued by this idea for a while now.
I found my original P4 fan unit and realised there was a spare mobo fan header located in an awkward place under the thermalright XP-120 CPU cooler, but I managed to deform my fingers and plug the P4 CPU fan in somehow.
I then attached three zip ties to each other (needed two of these 'units') and elegantly tied the fan down over the back of the GPU core area as shown in the pics I took using my W800i.
The fan unit is well suited to this task as its plastic housing allows itself to be raised away from the surface of the card and let air blow out, it makes a nice breeze and adds no noise to the system

As for ocing the card further the fan definately helped here I feel.

Normally I run 400 core, 1.06 mem from stock of 350 core, 1.00 mem
Sometimes I try at 410mhz core and If I try more than that it can fail the test at around 415mhz . The memory also will fail at 1.09ghz roughly.

Now the fan could not help with memory OC, I mean the air is cooling the GPU core more than the memory
So I concentrated on the noble cause of bumping up the core and was very pleased with the results considering it was an 'impromptu mod'

Some benchmarks I ran:

350/1.00= Havent done this for a while stock but roughly 10,000 3dmark03 points
400/1.06= 11,000 3dmark03, 1,960 3dmark06
410/1.06= 11,432 3dmark03
420/1.06= 2,269 3dmark06
425/1.06= 2,288 3dmark06
429/1.07= 11,617 3dmark03
431/1.07= 2,312 3dmark06
435/1.07= 11,656 3dmark03
435/1.07= 2,330 3dmark06
440/1.07= 11,745 3dmark03
440/1.07= 2,346 3dmark06
450/1.07= ~8000! 3dmark06- uh oh, thought i'd fried the card but i've put it back to 440 and its all good

So 440/350 x 100= 25.7% overclock from stock
I don't know what you guys think of that but I know my card has benefitted greatly from the silent cooling power that is the P4 fan.
The overall OC may seeem modest but my card has never been very good at ocing or indeed unlocking
I played trackmania sunrise, UT2K4 and Prey for a bit last night with no problems, hopefully I can keep it stable at 440/1.07 until I upgrade.

Thanks for looking,

syn

how do you mean? I'm using the fan only for the back of the pcb, the otherside the arctic cooler keeps things nice with some arctic silver paste thrown in for good measure

On the backside...Never did think about trying that... I do have an old P4 fan and heatsiink someplace...Might have to try that! Good idea...

cheers for the kind words reflux

yeh HemiCuda go for it, you don't have much to lose anyway, well maybe some zip-ties.

It might be too early to say but I can't see why this secondary cooling shouldn't help everyone that wants to get the max OC out of their card, in my case I got 30mhz more, and with higher-clocked cards that will proportionally add a bigger OC relative to me, if that makes sense lol

just another pic zoomed out a bit to better guage how the fan sits in the case:
