Default Why is there a huge A $$$ difference between these two...

Okay so i'm on newegg lookin at pretty new Graphics cards to spice up my life and also lookin at the new possibilites for my next computer. I'm lookin at a BFGs a 7800GTX for 520.00USD vs this 7900gt for 329.00USD now honestly this confuses the h*** out of me because they are both 256mb ddr3 PCI-E cards all teh sepcs are the same except the GPU of course. The 7900 has higher clock on everything so why is it 200.00USD cheaper? I'm sorry i'm not to affluent with GPUs lookin to learn a lil here...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ice=&maxPrice=

Edit: It even has cheaper shipping.... or did i just find a deal?

My only guess would be fact that the 7800 is a GTX and the 7900 is only a GT... i'm not an expert either by any means as i have no idea what the difference is between the suffixes but it's gotta be the reason for it.

I'll be interested to hear what the more knowledgable have to say about this

Im not sure about this but I think the gtx has more pixel pipelines. I am not positive about this though.

They have the same amount of Pixel Pipelines. Just a quick look on the ORB revealed that the 7800GTX scores around 1000 points higher in 3DMark06. Were talking a few frames a second in the real world.

Check this out: Link

I would get the 7900GT. Save money and smoke that GTX by overclocking. The naming schemes by card manufacturers these days will confuse the crap out of you if your not careful. Anything for a buck I guess.

Also, take a look at this thread: Link

That should help clear things up a bit.

Well thats the thing if i get it i will be hookin it up to a Swiftech MCW-60 GPU water block to cool it screw air Why bother when water is twice as nice. So yeah OCing is a definte route. Oh yeah i will also be spreadin on some artic Ceramique or AS5 for that. I just need about 630 for my upgrade say goodbye to my 2800+ and hello to a 165 opty dual core and that nice lil 7900GT it should blow my current Asus.... 6600 out of the water....

If its a vanilla 6600, you will notice a MASSIVE difference in graphics performance...

Umm right now i was plannin on watercooling it just kill teh buggy fan.... Which is why i am so attracted to Swiftechs waterblocks they have univeral mounts. So the mcw-60 will work great for 6600 and will also bolt up to a 7900. Yeah its just a cheap-o agp 8x agp card i bought for 100usd i think its a n6600-LE card so yeah its cheap....

From what it looks like, considering that the Nvidia 7(3x)00 series is cheaper to produce, with better clock-yields (Process shrink, plus other advances), that they are beginning to phase out the previous 7*** series.
A lack of supply would boost the price quite a bit. (As Evidence, what you pay for a 512Mb 7900GTX would cost about only $30 more than that 256Mb last-gen card you were curious about.)

The 7900GT is pretty much a 7800GTX just with a 90nm process instead. I would go with the 7900GT in that case because it'll overclock like a mofo.

The 7800GTX is rare and prices will show that. It's not worth what it costs, but the manufacturers know that people looking for a second one to put in SLI will pay the price. The 7900GT is the way to go, although that might have been mentioned already.
