Default ATI 9800xt need better fan?

If I want to OC my 9800xt, does it need a better fan? or does the one that comes on it do a good enough job? I just don't want to overheat it. Thanks!

You should be able to OC it some with the stock cooler, just run 3DMark01SE, 03 ot 05 after each 5mhz or so. If you see any artifacts (things that should NOT be there, white/black dots and tears are the most common) then you have pushed it too far.

Don't worry about killing your card via overheating, to do so it needs both more voltage (volt-mod) and to be run at frequencies that artifact in Windows for quite some time. Hell, I think all modern video cards will automatically turn off or scale down till the temp is safe.

To the get the max OC you will need better cooling though, Arctic Cooling (VGA Silencer), Zalman and using CPU heatsinks (requiers modding) are your best choices. Obviously water cooling or phase change cooling will be the best but they are not as practical.

The Arctic Cooling VGA silencer series are very good replacements for the stock HS and fans. My temps dropped 6 C during Lineage 2 grinding.

That's the same card I have... where do I find the ATi Tool? are those just the latest drivers or something? I downloaded the omega drivers, which give me the options to OC, but I just wanted to see what people are getting out of the OC with this card, without needing better cooling.

Also, if I'm overclocking, should I up the voltage on the card too?

Wink Arctic-Cooling Silencer 3

As soon as I get my ATI 9800 XT back from ATI I am going to get an Atctic-Cooling ATI VGA Silencer 3(9800 XT) from Jab-Tech.com ($22.95) I sent the card in to ATI for a cooling fan relacement but should have replaced it myself. The only issues with the cooling fan would be if you have added any heatsinks on the motherboard which would interfere with installing the card. Installing the card requires two slots so you may have to juggle cards around.
