| XFX PVT88PYDF4 GeForce 8800GT Newegg.com - XFX PVT88PYDF4 GeForce 8800GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail I'm in the middle of building a solid rig, and I wanted to get some info/user feedback on this card. I'm NOT looking for hardcore gaming, but using several graphic heavy programs at once (photoshop, flash, HD-Video viewing, etc), and possibly some video-out use. Your input is much appreciated. | ||

| The card gets a 5 for gaming, and 5 for everything else, but for what you need its too expensive. Get some more memory, faster CPU, but you dont need such a high end card. I heard these are perfect for what you need. Cheap, HDMI, DX10, decent gaming performance .. the list goes on. | Reflux is right. That's huge overkill for what you're doing. Unless you're doing 3Dmodeling/CAD type stuff you don't need it. Even for HD video you can use CoreAVC which'll let you watch HD movies on even the lowliest of computers. CPU & RAM will be much more important to you. If you absolutely must have a graphics card then get a 8600GT but even that'll be overkill. | ||

| That card would perform well, but for the uses you are listing, you could go cheaper and still get a good performing card. Photoshop and Flash won't require a very intense video card, and if you're not gaming that much, you shouldn't bother spending more than you have to. Seems like all you'll need is something with decent power and HD-capabilities. Try an 8600GT or X1950. Both should be relatively cheap. | ||

All of you guys give terrific advice, and I'm really glad to be a part of these forums. Hopefully I'll soon be able to give like-advice to others soon, myself.

| The 8800GT maybe a little overkill for your main uses but I wouldn't down grade to a lesser card like a 8600 or an ATI card unless the few dollars difference is going to break you. Otherwise you'll leave yourself open to having to upgrade sooner for even more money. If you've got the cash spend it, you'll also be helping the economy :-) | ||

That's what we're here for ![]() BTW - Slaymate makes a great point. It always comes down to performance vs. value... and those differences are subjective.

Right as rain chieftan! The more I think about this PC I'm building, the more I realize it would be just f*uckin' STOOPID to not have a good card for gaming. I'm sure I'll want to do SOME gaming on it (I leave my gaming to consoles - and for this gen I've got a 360). However, it'd be nice to see what I've been missing, since all the PC gamers swear upon the platform. Yeah, I'll do some gaming. And that eForce 8800 looks DOPE. Thanks guys - I've narrowed down my mobo choice to either the Gigabyte X38-DQ6, or the Asus Maximus Formula (or Formula SE). They are both excellent boards...but I'm lost on that decision!!! ![]()

First question: are you going to overclock? Second question: have you read this most excellent thread, started by reflux: http://forums.pcapex.com/hardware_ad...look_here.html -godling

| Unless you just want to be the biggest overclocker with money I would be looking at the Asus P5K. You'll save alot of cash and it's still a Great Overclocker :-) I just stuck a E6750 in one and it's running at 3.6 GHz at 1.375 volts. If it wasn't my office PC I'd crank it up to 1.45v and try for 3.8 to 4 Ghz. | ||

While I know nothing about overclocking, I'd like to learn about it and do it, so yes, I am going to overclock. Slaymate, yeah, I'm still up in the air with the boards - but I don't mind spending a bit of money if it's going to yeild longevity. Again though, nothing is set in stone yet. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into the board & processor!

Slaymate - considering the reviews here on NewEgg for the E8400, I'm gonna stick with that processor. 69 Reviews @ 100% - 0 votes for 4*'s, 3*'s, 2*'s, or 1*. That's goddamned impressive!!! ![]()

| in about 2 weeks i'll have myself an E8400. Reflux and I have gone into deep conversation about this CPU. It definitely looks like sweet buy for the hardcore geeks like us from what I've seen. Go for it, just make sure the board you buy supports 45nm cpus or make sure the is a bios update for the board you currently have. | ||

I think for the most part I've narrowed my board down to either the Gigabyte X38-DQ6, or the Asus Maximum Formula - but I'm leaning towards the Gig because it's apparently better for overclocking. Any opinions between these two boards? ![]()

I have the Gigabyte X38-DS4, which is practically the same as the DQ6 barring cooling and a few power phases, and it's a pretty decent board. I prefer Asus bios' though. I was going to go for an Asus P5E but the board cooling is so extensive that my Tuniq Tower wouldn't have fitted. The Maximus Formula also shares the capacious heatsinks, so make sure whatever cooler you choose fits. But remember you don't have to spend so much to get decent performance. P35 performs as well - the only things it lacks is a second 16x PCI-E slot and PCI-E 2.0 support.

What kind of "cooler" would I need with the Gigabyte board? Would not the CPU's stock heatsink and fan be sufficient? As I said, I've not built a pc in years, so if there's anything I'm missing about this board, I'll have to do some extensive reasearch. But a quick answer on that subject from one of you guys would be greatly appreciated! ... ![]()
