A router provides an actual interface between the computers so they can communicate. A switch is to allow hooking up one keyboard, one mouse, and one monitor up to several different computers at once. Simple switch to A and your keyboard, mouse, and monitor will work with computer A. Switch to B, same thing. Saves you from having an individual keyboard, mouse, and monitor for each and every computer you have. Rob

Actually, Rob, you just explained the difference between a KVM switch and a router. The difference between a Networking Switch and a Router is that a Router broadcasts all network packet calls to EVERY machine on the network, and the proper recieving computer responds. A network switch actually creates an internal map of all of the computers on the network segment and creates internal direct links from one pc to another so when network packets travel through the switch, ONLY the recieving computer gets each packet. This not only increases speed as you aren't waiting for the "Yo, Over here!" portion of the communication, but it's also more secure, so a third pc on the segment can't 'listen in' anywhere near as easily. | Apex Tech Maniac | Actually, a router has the ability to act as a DHCP server to assign IP addresses, while a switch can only connect computers to the network. A switch is like a Hub, but instead of dividing the maximum bandwidth among the number of computers on the network, with a switch usually each computer can connect at the maximum network speed. For our LANs, we use a cable modem plugged into a router plugged into a switch, and everyone plugs their rigs into the switch. The router is pretty much only a DHCP server for the network. Rob, you were thinking of a KVM switch, which is what allows for connecting one set of peripherals to several computers ::EDIT:: D'OH, Drougnor beat me, and with a better explanation as well
