Question Old school..anyone with a slot A?

Hi there.
Alright so i'm just slapping together a computer for a friend of mine that hasn't had computer yet in college. So I had one sitting at home and decided, why not!? Specs on the proc. an amazing AMD athlon 650mhz classic k7. And of course to make things more complicated it runs of a Slot A MB, which have definately become rare and outdated. None the less this computer is by no means for anything close to high end at all..simply able to surf the web, and do school work pretty much. So, I sourced a MB for around $34 bucks..but wanted to check if any of you had any thoughts *besides ditching it,* or a Slot A amd MB laying around.

This is all info I found by looking up and searching last night. I'm not sure if the mb itself has to be AMD but since the processor is ..my thought is it needs to have the same chipset *right word?*

Thank you!
Sincerely,
Tyler aka Twinscroll

Well, I no longer have the mobo for it, but if you need an extra Slot A CPU, I have a 600MHz Athlon.

I was about to edit the post. I forgot where I was. this would probably better suited for the trading post..or troubleshooting?

Ah that'd be great, only thing is its one of the chips on the MB that actually broke off. Hence needing another mb. I do have a good 650mhz athlon that is sitting on the board at the moment. Would anyone you know have a slot A MB?

Let me know if I should post this somewhere else..since it doesn't really have to do with OC.

It is now in the proper Trading Post forum.
Unfortunately I do not know anyone else with a Slot A board, sorry.

Edit: I notice you are reading through the trading post rules now, so hopefully you will be making an addendum to your post soon, or unfortunately it will have to come down until it complies. Just a quick heads-up.

I will say though that this board:

http://www.ascendtech.us/itemdesc.asp?ic=MBSLAASUK7M

was the one I used to have and was rock solid for quite some time and even allowed for some fair overclocks without the Golden Fingers mod, worth looking into.

Edit: This board is a bit better though:

I appreciate the help godfoot! yes I am on reading the rules now and will make sure to change it to what it needs to be changed to. Thank you for the heads up though.

Peace,
Twinscroll

PS. Godfoot, was wondering if you had ever bought anything from either of those sites. Both are the ones I was able to hunt down yesterday. Just had to wonder if there was anything to be said about them. Thanks again.

Good lookin out grandpa. That helps me get a better fix on what the prices are looking like. I actually might get some other stuff off him.

I was reading up on the actual processor in there and it is "Slot A" vs. being "Socket A." I have received the justdeals.com " thanks to "musclecars&computers" from several now and will most likely order one off of there. Anyone with suggestions on which to get off there?

I appreciate the input guys. Thanks again!

The K7V-T (like in the second link I provided in post #5) will accept PC133 RAM whereas the K7M will only accept PC100... and less of it. You can put up to 1.5GB of PC133 in it versus 768MB of PC100.
I would say that is a good enough reason to go with it, unless you have lots of PC100 RAM lying around.

I would have to agree. I got a chance to take a look at it earlier and noticed that, like you said, it would take both types of ram..which i have both types of ..and more of it. So good lookin. Aight well i guess I'll purchase that monday..just gotta make sure they have the drivers for it *saw that they had them to download of the site*

Thanks for all the help!
Sincerely,
Twinscroll

Good luck with that board. I would imagine if you really wanted to (just for kicks since it is an older rig), you could OC her by at least 400-600MHz if that board is as similar as I think it is to the K7M.
