| Apex Tech God | Im in the market for a hard drive that has Ceramic Platters. New or Used, Dead or Alive. Doesnt matter. These drives are rare to find. If anyone knows of a site that lists which HDDs are made with ceramic platters or has a drive with them in it. I would like to trade buy whatever and get it off your hands.

| Apex Tech God | Ceramic Platters : Hard disks have read and write heads flying over rapidly spinning platters of magnetic media. You normally never get to see these platters because they are sealed in a dust-free chamber which is placed inside the computer case. Hard disk platters are made of aluminum-nickel or chemically hardened glass. A new variety is made of glass-ceramic, which is stronger and stiffer than the aluminum-nickel disks. Glass-ceramic platters get their basic shape from glass upon which ceramic crystals are grown, making the disks stronger than ordinary glass disks. Glass platter disks have several advantages over aluminum. Glass is more stable than aluminum, and that makes it more resistant to shock. If the drive happens to be dropped it has less chance of being damaged by coming in contact with the head. The glass is smoother than aluminum, allowing the read/write head to fly closer to the platter. This increases the amount of data that can fit onto the drive. Glass is stiffer than aluminum and therefore can be made thinner. This translates into reduced weight and height. The drawback is that glass platters are more expensive to produce than aluminum. I also like to know what he wants to do with those drives.

| Apex Elite Tech | I was going to say "try ebay", and then give you a link to one so you'd look like a jackass. But instead, I'll look like a jackass and post a link to THIS CERAMIC TURKEY PLATTER. Dammit, I'm tired. edit: fixed punctuation.

| Sk8-Hoe-r | Yeah what model numbers have ceramic platters? I have like 3-4 old hard drives but im not to sure how to tell if they have ceramic platters. All the platters look the same, feel the same, make the same noise when you hit them with something, flex the same amount.......What do I look for to see if they are ceramic???
