Since you're looking to buy used anyway, you might look at getting some refurbushed Logitech Z-5300's. It's a 280 watt, THX-certified 5.1 surround system. JustDeals.com has them for $95 shipped -- the retail price is $230.

Haven't used them myself, but they got 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon from nearly 50 users. Incidentally, brand new they're $189 at Amazon or $162 shipped at Newegg.

Another option for ya:

Amazon has the Sony SRS-D5100 5.1 system on sale for $95 after rebate. Those also list for $230, but unlike the above Logitech's, these are brand new. However, they're not THX certified and are only 140-watts total (which doesn't necessarily mean they sound worse).

Logitech has 3 great sets of 5.1 speaker that sell for under $100 regular price:

z640 are really decent, and very popular
x530 I have never heard
x620 I have the 2.1 version on my wifes rig, very happy with them

I can also recommend the Altec Lansing 251 Game Theater set ....... really decent 5.1 set for under $80. I really like mine.

funkyfrsh i think i will go with the ones you recomended. I have never had a problem with sony. The idea of logitech making quality computer speakers I find disturbing. I know a lot of my friends have them and say they sound great for the cash but logitech. At least sony has a history of making speakers.

Logitech has been the top selling computer speaker manufacturer for at least the past five years. Their high end sets are second to none, except Klipsch (but they are way too expensive).

When I think computer audio, several names come to mind, Sony is not commonly one of them.

Whatever you're comfortable with. But I think you'll find Logitech to be one of the top-recommended brands for speakers around here. As putwig said, the only better-sounding ones usually go for twice as much (or more). I recently bought some Logitech Z-3's for my fiancee, and was impressed not only by the sound quality but also the fit & finish (and I went with a Harmon Kardon for my main home theater).

I love my Z-640s. Only about $50 IIRC, and plenty powerful for a small room.

Always nice to catch 'em on sale! Seems they normally go for $199.99 there. Often the best rebate deals happen at local stores like BestBuy.

Well sony aint a bad brand, but for computer speaker go with logitech or klipsch unless you have more money. Also jake i think you should consider different brand on car audio stuff because sony tend to xplod if you know what i mean. I use to like sony before it came out with its xplod series of car audio product. just my two cent.
