| Apex Tech Fanatic | I know this is a pretty noobie question, but exactly what boards will work with that Pentium M? Any socket 478 board? I'm interested in it and I'm just trying to figure out what else I'd need. | |

I have the ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe Mobo and they don't work in it.

Intel's mobile chips use socket 478, but they are not compatible with 99% of socket 478 boards because the pin layout is different. Thus they are sometimes referred to as Socket 479. There are only two desktop boards that I know of which will take these CPUs - AOpen and Asus models I think. Thrasher, I'm not sure if you're aware, but that Banias-core Pentium M has been superceded by both the Dothan-core revisions, Core Duo, and now Core 2 Duo. So don't expect to shift it easily! bigmoneyhvywght is correct in saying it requires an 855 chipset. The Celeron M you should have more luck with, as it is a more recent chip. It's more compatible with various different chipsets. I reckon your best bet for shifting these is to head over to NotebookForums.com - Notebookforums.com Notebook reviews - laptops reviews. I've sold there before and it's a good community with people who want all sorts of crazy stuff.

They would work in your board then if you could track down one of these. ASUSTeK Computer Inc. It converts 478 to 479 so you can run Pentium-M's on desktop boards, they perform really well too.

Yup, but I was thinking you could possibly email the sellers and negotiate for US shipping or something? Thanks for the rep anyways. ![]()

| I'm sure there will be loads on US ebay... They were really popular about 12 months ago. Performance clock for clock is amazing on Pentium-M's with 2MB L2 cache. AnandTech: Intel's Pentium M Desktop Part II: ASUS' Pentium M to Pentium 4 Socket Adapter | ||

Yup, a PM780 comes in about the same speed as a mid-range A64 at stock, and bear in mind that they'll overclock well too, due to be so cool running and low-voltage optimised. HWbot.org - Browse Hardware. Seems that a 780 (2.26ghz) @ 3.3ghz will do 18 seconds Super Pi!! They are damn expensive though.

You mean 780 @ 4.2GHz will do 18 seconds Super Pi. Still good though. HWbot.org - View Result. I used to use a 740 on a P4C800/CT-479 (don't have it anymore so sorry T2) combo. It would do 2.9GHz 24/7 which was sweet. Crushed the core on my CPU and couldn't afford to get a new one so I sold the board.
