Default Folding 100%?

I kept meaning to post this, but always got distracted by something else. RBIEZE mentioned in my other thread (when I said something about giving my CPU a break) that if I was worried about the processor, I could just lower the CPU utilization some? How do I do that? I'm currently using the version of F@H that is downloadable on the PCApex "Teams" heading (F@H3-console, IIRC)? Is this version WAY outdated? If so, if anyone could recommend what I should be using for better performance and where I can get it, I would be much obliged! I ask this, because I can't find any way to adjust anything. It simply opens a command prompt window and starts folding, and I can't enter any commands or anything. I either let it run, or close the entire thing down. I thought about trying to get a different version of F@H, but I am still new at this, and don't know how the team thing works and whatnot. Was afraid there would be a problem with me and/or the team getting the points I accumulate. Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Thanks for folding! I use the graphical client, puts a little red gear on the task bar. You can right click on it, select configure, advanced tab, and adjust the CPU use percentage. I recommend 100%, but it is your computer! If you right click one the gear on the task bar, the first screen should show the user name and team number. You definantly want team 596! I am partial to Fred_G for the user name, but T2 and others have teams also. Or just fold under your own name.

As far as the console client, I don't like it, and can't do much with it, but that is my own stupidity. If you try the graphical client and run into any problems, PM me and I will try to help.

Here is the link: http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html

I am assuming you are using windows.

Have a good one!

Thanks Fred! One question tho. Should I wait to start using the graphical client once the WU finishes? I'm assuming by switching clients, it might be a headache (or impossible) to transfer my current WU onto it? And also, is the graphical client actually any slower than the console that I'm using?

Either way, thanks much for the link and the info. I'll definitely check it out!

Yeah, if you switch you will lose the work are doing. Your points will transfer for finished work if you stay with the same name and team. As far as speed, I have heard that the console is faster, but I like the icon in the tray, and the easy configuration. Probably 90% of my borgs are running the graphical client and I am doing ok on the folding team (#12).

Just wait untill you finish the current WU, then get the graphical client. I like it because I can just right click on it, shut it down, and get my game on! Just don't forget to restart it when you are done!

And if you are looking at dropping down the CPU usage, I think that if there is a speed difference, you will not notice it.

Have a good one!

it shows that you can limit the amount of cpu usage, you do not have to download the graphical client.

Thanks again Fred. I hope I can manage to stay up til around 3am Friday when this one finishes. lol

Right now reducing the CPU usage isn't a big deal, but it would be nice to have the option if I feel the need. I have the red icon down in my tray, but that's only because of the TrayIt! program. Not quite the same, since I have to restore it and then close the program.

I tried those commands, but I can't figure out how to do it. It doesn't allow me to enter any commands, and I don't know how to get a prompt up to do so. (BTW, I'm running F@H v 3 console, the one that's downloadable under the "Teams" heading on this site). I figured that was the best way to start, but I didn't realize at the time how outdated it is.

Would going to the latest version of the console version speed up my folding times, btw? Now that I think about it, my new rig should be up and running in a couple weeks. It's going to have an Opty dual core, and I'm going to leave this thing running and folding 24/7 (i do that anyway, but hey), so I may just leave the console on this one, and install the GUI version on the new rig... maybe twice even!

I am almost totally clueless when it comes to a CLI environment, trying to learn it, but where do I double click at?

Translation: I can use and configure the graphical folding program, but the console is a mystery to me.

Thanks again for folding!

I'm in the same boat. Like I said earlier, I have the red gear icon in my tray, but it's only there because of the TrayIt! program that downloads with the console version downloadable from the "Teams" Page up above in the title bar area (between "News" and "Hosting").
But I don't know if there's a way I haven't found yet, or it's just not possible on this old version of F@H, but I can't find any way to enter any of the -commands listed no the website. No biggie tho really. I've thought about it, and I'm just going to keep the console version on here and put the GUI version on the new rig.

I would like to know if anyone knows if upgrading to the latest console version will help my speed at all?

Don't the graphical and terminal interfaces share work units on Windows & Linux? They do on MacOSX. Strange.

Good question! I am not sure. I will have to try it sometime unless someone else knows for sure.
