![]() Do you want to make a diffrence and help humanity?? OUR GOAL Understanding how proteins self-assemble ("protein folding") is a holy grail of modern molecular biophysics. What makes it such a great challenge is its complexity, which renders simulations of folding extremely computationally demanding, and difficult to understand. The Stanford group has developed a new way to simulate protein folding. However, this method is extremely computationally demanding and they need our help. What are proteins and why do they "fold"? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out their biochemical function, they remarkably assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, remains a mystery. Moreover, perhaps not surprisingly, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious effects, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson's disease. (See Scientific Background for more details about what are proteins, why do they fold, why this is so difficult, and why do we care). By becoming part of the Pimprig Folding@Home team and donating the spare cycles of you CPU, you are become part of a worldwide effort to help scientists understand and cure some of the worst diseases today. Wanna Get started right away??? To download the folding@home program go here And scroll down this page for a complete how-to on how to sign up Need more info?? | What we need to do is involve all members. Some of these guys have access to multiple PCs that could seriously make a PR team a contender. All pimps, understand that although this is something that is for the good of all mankind, it is also a competition. The current leader is the [H] team. The program runs in the background and doesn't affect performance at all. But it is designed for people with broadband. With the members we have, I'm sure we could move up in the points pretty quickly.

| Folding@Home is something I've wanted to do for a while now. It's odd that you mention it because I was planning on doing it once I've got the new system up and running next week. So count me in, even if we're not the 'leader', at least we're doing some good. Snafu | ||

From what their site says, theive aready made some important discoverys useing distributed computing. one that would have taken years or even decade longer, using "simple" supercomputers......i dont remeber what the exact figure was, but they are suppost to have logged some where around a couple of centurys of computer time already... ![]() Yep just another usless factoid from the Goat Last edited by scapegoat; 09-September-02 at 03:16 PM..

| OK Scapegoat, you heard it from the boss. Go ahead and register us and let us know when we can log on. I would post very specific instructions on how to register correctly. GK, once this gets going I would suggest a link on the front page, possibly an option during registration to sign up also. | ||

| Ok Everyone, we are all set up as a Folding@home team. Follows are complete instructions on how to sign up 1. Go to http://folding.stanford.edu/ and click on the Participate(Download) option on the sidebar. Then chose your appropriate OS. The file is only a small 300kb file so it shouldnt take to long. I would recommend download the first option which works as a screensaver and also in the background. 2. On this screen input your desired user name. This can also be changed at any time by right clicking on the icon in the system tray and going to Configue 3. This is the most important part. Once the program is up and running on your system. Right click on the icon in the system tray and click configure On this screen you user name should already be present if not, or you want to change it do so. Next be sure you put our team number in the second box to insure that all work is credited to Pimprig. Our Team number is 596 This is the most important part Be sure to us 596 so all of your work units are credited to Pimprig EDIT- Thanks for the Edit duck(or whoever) i was just about to change that. | Ok next. If you need any help with the connection tab let me know Other wise its just standard fare. The fist check box, controls whether the program will ask you before it querys the server for more work. If you have broadband i would leave it uncheck. If you are on Dial-Up however, you might want to check it so you can log on to the internet first. Last but not least their is the advanced tab. This allows you to set your graphics options. If you are not going to be using this program as a screen saver, just running in the backgroud, you can lower all of these. And it also lets you set the CPU percentage. This allows you to customize, how much proccessing power you want to put into the program. I keep it at 100% all the time and i have not noticed a hit in any of my preformance. As long as it is set as lowest priority, other programs will take precendence over it and you shouldnt see a preformance hit. And it only uses a small 6MB of ram. Thats all there is to it, any questions ask away! Last edited by scapegoat; 10-September-02 at 02:59 AM.. | ||
