Question am I hurting my comp???

I leave Folding on this comp 24-7
my motherboard monitor shows my cpu temp as 55 celcius
my case is 29 degrees
I turned folding off for 15 minutes and my cpu temp dropped to 49 degrees
my case stayed the same
I guess im concerned that folding all the time could be damaging my comp over the long run
I am being stoopid here?

I have a shuttle AK39n mobo
with a barton 2500 with no overclock

Nope, 55 won't hurt your proc, though you'll prolly wanna look into seeing how to lower the temp, it's getting close to the bad zone

Don't get me wrong, Folding is a good moral thing to do. However, it is running your CPU at Max. to near Max. CPU usage. If you keep your computer upgraded the parts will probably last you longer than you have them. If your just using your computer and not upgrading as you go then it will probably wear out sooner than expected. I'm not sure what the lifespan of a CPU is, but I'm extremely hard on all of mine and theyv'e all lasted for years. I had a Intel 300 MHz CPU that had been running MAX'ed out at 500 MHz with max. voltage nonstop for 2 years (as my internet server) till I gave it to my mom 2 years ago. I bought her a new computer for Christmas and my brother gave his girlfriend the old Intel. It's still running strong. If you can't afford to fix it or buy a new one if it breaks then quit folding. If your not concerned about the small increase in price then Fold.

If you are keeping it cool, it will last as if you weren't folding. There is only one enemy to CPU's (besides n00bs) and that is heat. It's not like an engine where you are wearing out parts when you max them out for long periods of time. Heat will kill it, folding won't and will help cure disease.

All parts have a life expectanly, used or not. Full usage or non usage can eroded any electrical part. Heat is very bad but continuous usage will wear it out. Only a idiot would say otherwise. I've had a computer for 20 years. Just because I've only been in this forum for a few month's doesn't mean I'm a noobie. I would have to say your a stupidie.

normal electrical erosion on CPU components is like 5-7 years i think. "they" say that overclocking shortens it to 4-5. after 4 years you should be upgrading anyways.
i believe htese numbers are based off of continual usage.

O geez no it becomes a moral question as well
for the 3 that I have at home from what I see I can afford to risk folding
but I also have 6 at work that fold 24-7 I have to rethink if this is the right thing to be doing now
It's one thing to possibly shorten the life of my equipment
a very different thing to possibly harm someone elses equipment
the reason I say possibly damage is some of the work comps are older and cooling may not be very good in them
I need to do some checking very soon

First off, you're an idiot. All electrical components have a life expectancy which is usually based upon them being used 24/7. Computer components are designed to be used, not babied. If you are worried about stressing your processor too much, that's fine with me. Myst used to be a great game.

Second, for you to enter our forum and tell someone who is very much your senior that you have more experience is not very bright. Especially when that someone is a mod. But, I can take criticism.

Baby your system if you want to and it will last you 20 years. We use ours for what it is designed for and the average rollover is about 3 years. Folding will not degrade the average lifespan of any CPU.

Moderator or not I'm gonna tell you my opinion. Right now I only see you digging a hole. I never claimed to be your senior, you only added the years up and compared them. I didn't. As far as babying a computer, I sure you weren't talking about me. See my post under Exterme Cooling/The Freezer. I don't baby anything. I maybe banned from this forum after this post but I won't be eaten. If your gonna moderate then moderate. If your gonna post stupidty then just be stupid.

And if you actually read my original post, I'm in favor of Folding. What I gave was good advice if you would of actually read it.

You know, I know you're no idiot, but how much do you know about the entirety of processor design and physics?

I know enough to know that unless it overheats, it won't die from extended use.

The way that parts die is friction, which wears down parts, changing their shapes. Then they no longer work.

Electrical "friction" is not even a considered concept anymore in computing. The only way that a processor becomes damaged barring user stupidity is heat. It causes uneven expansion, and that damages components.

The only thing crazier than overheating a processor is challenging PR staff on its own turf.

BA, this should be a show.

First of all you made a bad decision of calling a well respected member of PR stupid, im not saying you are stupid or not, i honistly dont know the answer to the question myself but it is wise to make a reputation for yourself before you start mouthing off to a senior member. my $.02, i highly doubt you will be banned cause you called him stupid, this is a great forum and they let people say what they have to say, freedom of speach.

Well it sounds like everyone has a higher education than me. I truely doubt it but fine. I never said anything to discourage Folding. I only said you MAY have replace parts sooner with continuous CPU usage. I'm just the idiot making $100,000 a year with a computer modding habit so don't listen to me. I don't know anything, I'll just quit posting advise altogether. I'm an idiot for trying to help. I apologize for my own personal stupidy.

Whoa there pony...
If you are gonna make claims like that you need to come correct to start...
We (Staff) and resident all hold BA in high regaurd, so stupidity comes only with commiting "forum respect suicide" IMO.
Back your claims up with some proof, our Rigs are running all is good there, so let's see what ya got to back up the shorten life claim....
Oh and BTW...WTF does your "claimed" annual income have to do with sh!t?...and if you are all that...why doesn't gear reflect such a bulls!t statement?

Once again no one's read my 1st post. I've had compter's running for years under the most stressful conditions with no problems. I only said if your concerned about Folding then don't do it if you can't afford to fix anything that may happen. And I said to continue to Fold if the Small increase in price is of no concern. It does cost more to run it 24/7 at continuous use. More parts or not. I gave good advice and in return I've been attacked by 1st "a moderator" and then by a bunch of poster's who won't read all of my post's. I do respect for BigAkita and Zennzzo but my 1st post was a good reply.
