Default Folding@Home with VMWare?

Anybody doing it? I would love to hear about it.

Yeah, I've done it, but it's better to fold with an OS on native hardware. (You don't have the contention with the VMWare overhead) Plus, unless it's YOUR environment, the high CPU usage will cause all sorts of alarms, and make any VMWare admin investigate why it's using so much CPU for so long.

Wow, my first full post on the Wii browser.us Typing with the Wiimote is kinda sureal. Feral, is there a particular reason you would need to use Vmware?

(need to dig out my usb keyboard.us This is worse than texting!)

Sweet, I didn't know there was a cert for VMWare. How hard was it to get?

No, just wondering how well it works for this kind of application. With all these multi-core systems out today was just wondering if it would work better that way. I know about the RAM overhead of running a VM so imaging if you were to run a bunch of VM's you would need to be running a 64bit OS and have 8+GB of RAM atleast, maybe even 16...

Or you could just install winserver on it natively, then run x amount of threads of F@H. There's CPU overhead too, especially of you're running the free version of VMWare. ESX, not so much.

VMWare cert test wasn't too bad; the problem with the VCP is you have to take the VCP course, not just pass the test...and it's expensive. Mine was US$2,900 + tax for the course + US$175.00 + tax for the test.

Wasn't any harder than any of my other certification exams; standard rules apply - read everything 3 times, then eliminate all wrong answers before choosing the right one. You get a free copy of VMWare Workstation Pro with your VCP

You can use VMware to cluster your second core with other PC's and thus enable cluster folding. (which is kinda neat if you ask me) Otherwise just setting affinity on apps (such as the cluster app in Win Server 200x).

Idealling it isn't all that great for folding. I use it to test out new linux distros, and F@H isn't allowed at my school computers (some rights kill the app for hogging CPU) But it doesn't notice the VMware hogging.

Didn't really slow down any WU's too much, the average 3GH P4 at my school normally would crunch an WU in about 32 hrs, with VMware it takes about 33.

Nity course knowledge though, i have myself a nice leagal copy of the enterprse VMware (i love my school) I also have Virtual PC 2k7 for free too, oh wait that was microsofts way to give things out wasn't it?

VMware is kewl, I'll have to hit you with Questions when nessesary Joose.

VMWare is great; you're typically seeing only a 5% hit for overhead...MS Virtual Server is more like 30%-40%
