Default first box is linux folding.

We will have to see how this is gonna work. I'm down on points recently due to trying my first linux machine. Finally seem to have it running properly and its folding as I type.

This is my first trial with a non-windows based OS so it's been a real learning experience. I've got Ubuntu 7.04 running with the new SMP F@H client. System is an Opty 165 at stock speeds and 512 of ddr400. Hopefully this will give me a good boost in production over running two instances of regular folding with those specs in a windows environment.

If any of you linux guys have any pointers to streamline and/or boost the efficiency of the system please let me know. This box is only for folding and anything I can do to reduce the cpu load and give more resources to F@H would be appreciated.

Well, i havent experomented with 7.04 ubuntu yet, i ran 6.06 for a while F@H single and dual core (one and two instances, while running censors for temps, and protein think for monitering status of F@H)

But 'd lke to run the SMP client when i get my 3800+ X2 back in action

Seems like the smp f@h is using about 95% of each cpu core when running. I'm looking up what to do about that one (would be nice to be at 100%). Other than that it looks like the ppd are going to be fantastic. It's working on a WU thats worth 1700 points or so and it will have it finished in under 2 days. Your talking over 800 ppd for just one machine.

Edit: I figured out how to do the temp and cpu load monitoring, now only to set up a folding monitor to keep better tabs on that stuff.

BTW, what do you use for virus protection/ firewall on linux?

Nothing, i used a firewall on my internet connection, being that its a live CD running, the virus would only affect it until i rebooted anyhow... i run the package manager for temps and have a txt file with all the commands in order fo any need to reboot.

heres the Kicker....NONE. Linux is its own firewall/AV. Most virus's out there are made from linux, and if ever one comes out, the developers of your Distro Fix right away. Linux is pretty rock solid, unless you screw something up by accident and have to reformat.

Im not too familiar with ubuntu, but I familiar with kubuntu (Ubunutu with KDE) and anything that has KDE. Usually KDE has a package manager, called kpackage, GNOME (which is what ubunutu uses) might have one also. It might take some searching to find it.

If you cant find the package manager, go here and look around a bit.
FSF/UNESCO Free Software Directory

More specifically,
Free Software Directory: Firewalls

Since ubuntu is based on debian, you will be looking for *.deb files (or *.tar.gz or *.tar-Both are used by linux). Clicking on the deb file will download the application and install it. Think of a deb file as a torrent file, but its self installing and unpacking.

Good Luck, It will take a while, but you'll get used to linux and your every day routines.

This version uses what they call "synaptic package manager" I have spent a few hours tonight playing with that trying to whittle down unnecessary processes and drains on system performance. This computer basically is just for folding so stuff like printer support, audio and office type stuff all got removed. I knocked 15 items off the running processes list and freed up another 50meg of mem for f@h.

I knew Linux didn't have nearly the problems that a windows os has with virus' and stuff. Just figured I'd ask about that one. I loaded it onto the hard drive for daily use, my cd drive is flaky at times and I didn't want to mess with running it as live cd all the time.

The problem I mentioned with only running 95% on the cores seems to be a bug with the 64bit Linux smp cores. I checked the Stanford forums and several people have mentioned this same problem and a cure is hopefully in the works.

Thanks guys for the help with my questions.

Thats a pretty cool article. Makes more sense now about the hows and why's with linux and virus.

I spent some more time playing around and reading articles. The folding is going well also. It completed it's first WU this afternoon. Unit 2604 worth 1760 points, roughly 1d 20h to complete. I also got FahMon 2.2.0 to work on the system so I am now tracking my progress better. Doing the same WU again and FahMon claims I should see roughly a 860 point per day average from the computer.(not sure of the math on that one but it's what the program claims)

Thats about the average points for an Opty165/170.

I am surprised that you recieved that WU with only 512MB of ram ,but your times seem good.

Ive been trying to get more people to fold SMP units, but Its falling on deaf ears.
If everyone folding on team 596 with multicore Cpu's were to switch to SMP units, we'd be Cranking out the points Again.

Good job vf1000

Hopefully tonight I am going to convert my main rig to a SMP machine. Then I'll have the opty 165 @ stock speeds and an FX-60 OC'd to 3ghz. That should give my production a real boot in the rear.
