Default Onboard Audio Help Needed for Newb

The SATA controller on my old A8N5X mobo wasn't doing too good since i got it, got to the point where i couldnt boot off my hard drive, so i got another one, my friend's DFI Lanparty UT nf4 ultra-D

for anyone that doesnt know, this motherboard comes with a sound card that plugs into the motherboard down by the i/o plate

im using the realtek ac97 drivers off the cd that came with the mobo (the nvidia drivers didnt work either) and i dont get any sound from my headset, or my headphones, though i have been told that my mic still works

right now the card itself doesnt have any jumpers on it at all though my friend assures me that this is the way it is supposed to be

and becuase my friend is so well organized, he no longer has the manual, nor can i seem to find any websites that can help me

if anyone knows if there are supposed to be the jumpers in place, and where (to use the ports in the sound card itself, the cable from the case wont reach back to the card) to put them, or perhaps a different solution, i'd greatly appreciated it

Onboard audio is disabled in the BIOS
The BIOS Setup program is accessed by pressing the key after the Power-On Self-Test (POST) memory test begins and before the operating system boot begins. Go to the Advanced > Peripheral Configuration menu to make sure onboard audio is enabled.

Audio settings in the sound mixer are incorrect
Check your audio mixer software to ensure audio is not muted or the volume level is not turned too low.

The speakers or headphones may be connected to the wrong jacks
Make sure you connect all speakers to the correct jacks. If you connect them to line-in or microphone jacks, they won't work.

Audio drivers are not properly installed
Check Device Manager under the Sound, video and game controllers section for any errors associated with the audio driver. Reinstall the audio driver if necessary.

Audio to back panel is muted if front panel is connected
Check your audio mixer software for a setting that mutes back panel audio if you have plugged headphones into a front panel audio solution. Uncheck this setting to allow audio to both the back and front.

Sound Playback is set to wrong device
In Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices, go to the Audio tab. Check the default device for sound playback; there may be multiple selections. Select the desired device, either rear panel or front panel.

i probably should have specified that im a newb with my new mobo, not with computers in general, i know which jacks to plug into, how to check my drivers, etc.
the problem was with my friend; he began to set it up to connect the front jacks in my case to the card, it wouldnt reach, but he didnt put the jumpers back into the card

a quick check (not really) of the dfi forums and i found a few ppl that had the same problem (i wonder if they have the same retard friend)

thanks to all of PCA for the help

now i just need to find some jumpers.......
