| Its just amazing, we step into this other alias online. Its like we are another person. Do you ever feel like you wish you could be someone else? Its kinda like that. You come to this website or maybe another one and log in with a different name than your own. You may act completely differently than in person. Your avatar may be an evil warrior yet you are a quiet guy at work who is nice to everyone. You might be a complete asshat on here yet in real life you drive a VW with a peace frog on the bumper. Just sit back and think about it for a minute, you are not who you are online. We may act similar to the character you really are but we assume this role as someone else. I think that we have avatars and handles because we dont want to represent exactly who we are, we want to become someone else and experience something completely different than normal. Right now my avatar is grey fox, the mysterious ninja from metal gear solid. I like to think of myself as him when I am online (talk about nerdy). I hope I am not the only one who thinks this way. Well I guess this post was just a brain dump of what I was thinking. Anyone else have somewhat the same idea? | ||

| I know exactly what you mean, as ive had that feeling in the past. But here, I feel completely comfortable being myself. My avatar is a skeleton from an Alkaline Trio image I like... it in no way denotes anything about my personality... other than that I like the aforementioned band. | ||

| No, its just a different facit (sp?) of our personalty, one of which some of us would never act like in real life. The internet gives that escape, that you dont have to be with a person face to face to have a conversation (I was discussing this sometime ago with a friend on mine), On the net you could practically say what ever you want without any restrictions, of course some people are nice no matter what, But on the other hand, it may be a benefit to people who cant speak in society (either because of society or another reason totally) and can get more of a voice on the net. Ive come up with the theory that it may be the next part of evolution...Or just another hurdle, like TV or the phone. I dont believe that, but its one of the many theorys Ive come up with... | ||

| I would guess I act differently online than in regular life. If I start talking computers to my coworkers you can actually see their eyes glass over. I tend to curse more offline also. This place tends to make me more civil if anybody can actually believe that one. ![]() | ||

| I understand what your saying, some people tend to try to act smarter, and if you prrof read, and spellcheck you just look smarter, things like that take away the slurs and accents alot, as well as the small things like your personality traits. Personally i think i act nearly identicalas i do in RL as i do on PCA, i try to be as normal as possible but definately curse more in life than on here, it is alot like civilizing yourself, but thats all to do with rules set forth, and in most RL situations those rules aren't there. The sad part about RL is people don't appreciate knowledge of computers if there not interested, they'd rather just useone than know anything about it, exaggeration is another trai that doesn't usually apply online, but i understand where your coming from, it is a very different place online. The sig avatar situation, I like NIN so i use trent for a avatar, My panasonic CD player has what my sig resembles, i use the thing nearly everyday, and it reminds me of life compared to PCA/online life. | ||

| I think in the end we as humans like to step out of ourselves and become someone else for a day, week, ect. I completely agree about the computer knowledge thing in real life. People just dont appreciate a good conversation about computers these days, the same goes for gaming. Its almost like you are talking in a different language. | ||
