Default Judgin' a book by it's cover ?

While i dont genrally bitch much or whine or whatever, today someting happen'd that just kinda left a bad taste in my mouth and i felt like rantin' for a minute or three.

I went out this fine mornin' to get my coffee and start out my day. As i walked up to the door two ladies were walkin out , so me bien raised proper by my momma, i held the door for them and as always , waved my arm in jesture for them to pass first. My momma always told me to respect folks and never forget my manners when it came to women. So as the two ladies passed out the door, one of the two gave me a look , that to me said, "thanks for nothin' scumbag" and without even a " Thank you " walked out and down the sidewalk.

I guess my rant as it were is this, just because someone looks a certain way or is dressed a sertian way, does this give us the right to dispense with manners. Now i know what i look like and how i appear to most folks but still, i was taught to say Yes Ma'am, Yes sir, thank ya kindly, and all the other curtious things you say to someone. I just kinda wonder what makes someone forget these things.

Well thats my rant , thanks for takin' the time to read it, and y'all have a good day.

That was very rude of them. I was taught to do the same and always respect others until they do something to loose my respect. Some people are just asshats and will stereotype you. I'm used to it, I'm a teenager. I'm upto no good and I disrespect authority. That's exactly why I volunteer at a hospice, my local food pantry and tutor people.

Man, if I actually went by the whole 'first glace can tell you all you need to know about a person', I'd never have gotten to know the people I have over the years. Some of my best friends are ppl that on the outside, you'd think I would have tried to kill them for being everything I can't stand. But that's just the 'look'. The PERSON was a whole other matter.

Being a long hair, goatee sportin big guy that loves to wear black trench coats, I know ALL about getting the stinkeye from those upity ppl. If they don't want to get to know me, I figure it's their loss. I don't want to associate with anyone that shallow anyway.

Have you ever gotten "The Look" When ever you went into a store either by yourself or with a bunch of friends? I hated that look and felt like I was being treated like I did something wrong or I was going to steal something! Ever notice how the good Kids always get treated worse than other kids?

At least when you start getting a beard or turn 18 you dont get it as much as if I was 16..

Dude, you got nothing on me. I'm of Pakistani descent, I've had facial hair since 15. Ever try going through security when your flying alone when you perfectly fit a stereotype post 9/11?

You're 100% right Red! One thing though to keep in mind when you encounter rude people like that. Even if they have no manners, and judge a book by it's cover, at least you were the one who did right, and had class.

Well that happens to me all the time at work doing refrig. service, I usually say loud enough but pleasantly
" your welcome and have a nice day!" With a big ol smile on my face . That usually torque's their screws a bit.
Either that or you could either burp of fart! their my favorites!

I just love the people with the nice suit and tie with the cell phone stuck in their ear that assume you'll wait for them to go first, WRONG! But then again I have zero tolerance for ignorant people.

I've found that sterotypes exist for a reason. If it looks like a rose and smells like a rose, then it's probably a rose. If you know you're going to evoke a certain reaction because of the way you dress or talk, either don't dress that way, or don't be surprised by the reaction.

While , i do agree with you in part , In part my gripe is , no matter what someone looks like or what you might think of them , should you not always try and be polite to another person , like in my case , i know i look like a scum bag but if i open a door for you / your wife / your child , would you not still say thank you.? Do outward appearances effect our use of manners that much ?? In my case no, i dont care if your a bum or the pope , i would say thank you to either for a curtious deed done.

Guess this is one of those philosophical disscusions ............ I do however apreacaite the input / views

Yes, first impressions do mean a lot. That's why when I exited the military I went to my job interviews in long sleeved shirts. Imagine the amusement I had on my second day at my new "very conservative" job when I showed up in Dockers, a collared shirt, and a big tattoo of a screaming skull on the top of one forearm and a big bleeding Rose under the other. People didn't know what to think.

However, I was polite and didn't jump around yelling AAARRGH!! at anybody so they quickly looked past the tats. If I am in downtown KC and an intoxicated urine smelling bum holds a door open for me, I will tell him thank you.

I've noticed that. I get treated diffrent based on what i'm wearing and the location i'm in. For instacance when i'm wearing my sunday best or my buisness cloths i get treated better than when i'm wearing shorts and an Metallica shirt and a ball cap. Also when i'm at work people treat me w/ more respect and assume i know what i'm talking about. When i run into someone not on the job and try to help them out w/ there comp problems or help them w/ something else i get treated like a dumb kid, people arn't as open to my advice.

I was buying some new tires at a small repair shop once, and the guy behind the counter was talking to the other mechanic and they couldn't figure out what was wrong w/ this womans car. Listening to the problems and what they have already checked I offered my advice. The guy said, "thats not the problem, just let us do our job and u can go on ur very way." Well when i went back to pick up my tires the guy said i was right it was the starter, he apologized and said he had assumed i wouldn't know that much about cars.

Usually I went to my son's wrestling matches after stopping at home and putting some jeans, t-shirt, and workboots on. You know, my comfortable clothes. I would go to the match, everyone would leave me alone, and all was fine. There was one match out of town where I didn't have time to change and went in business attire, and had several other "businessmen" introduce themselves and hand me their cards. I blew them off and watched the matches.

Very good write up Hp , i musta missed it the first time around , sorry.

BA , i know what you mean , I once got hired , back in WV , and at the interview , had on clean jeans, long sleeve flanel **winter time** and met with the Co. owner and all the other important folks at the dealership. everyone treating me very kindly. after gettin' hired , the next day showed up in my wrenchin' uni. , short sleeves , clean but VERY stained work pants , and the service managers first words to me were " DAMN YOU GOT ALOT OF TATOO'S!!!!!!!! were you in prison ?? " and everyone there eyein' me funny for about a week.

** Side note - I shocked the living hell outta everyone there once , when i came back from NJ after attending a mitsu tranny school for 2 weeks. I came back with two bull rings pierced through the bridge of my nose , right between the eyes . Talk about gettin looks!!!

I'm always polite to people. It's the way I was raised. Unfortunately the world does judge you by the way you look. Doesn't make it right, but it's the way it is.

Well this is an interesting one.. on first impressions, I was on my way home today and stopped at conveinence store and noticed about 6 guys checkin over this Harley evidently trying to figure out why it wouldn't start. I went in got my stuff and on the way out I heard the one guy on his cell complaining to some other guy about bringing a trailer (it sounded like the guy he was talkin to didn't have the time)
Well I had an empty trailer hooked up to my work truck from an earlier job. So I figured what the heck.
I asked the guys whear they needed to go, they said like 2 blocks from my house. So I told em to load it up and I'll help em out.
One of the guys told me they called six different towing companies and non of them would come.
I don't know if it was due to the risk of damage to the Harley or what the deal was. But I suggested to the guys to check out H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group) since their the AAA for Harleys.
It was kinda neat cruising down the road with a 5 Harley escort.
How does this fit into first impressions? dunno but a dude on a rice burner will left to sit in my book.
