Default Tech school blues

I am currently in my second trimester at a local devry (i'm 19 and straight outta HS, in case anyone suspected i'm a 30 something in need if a career change) and i'm an electrical engineering (aka EET) major. They advertise that at that Devry there has an employment rate of over 90%, (rumor is because about 1/20 actually last the three years cause of how difficult the skool is.) all i gotta say is so far the 1/20 thing is problobly true. My first eet class had about 35 kids and ended with about 12. My concern is how does the school stack up against others. I've talked to some human resouse represenatives at some companies and they've said that a Devry education is great and i'd problobly be hired (my dads company and my dads friend's company). I've even met 2 people that have even said that they hire ONLY devry graduates (very small firms mind you.)

Alot of people at these forums seem to know alot about the buisiness world, does anybody know if going to Devry was the best choice or would i have been better off going to something more traditional?

I still question my choice of college for some reason despite all this evidence I have, thats my biggest character flaw with me, i'm my own devils advocate.

thanx for listineing

Not to sure about Devry, but I can tell you that ITT Tech is full of crap.

I've already got a bachelor's degree and they wanted about $60K out of me for another one. Wrong! As it is, they are currently under investigation for federal fraud, faking attendance records and grades to keep that federal student financial aid rolling in.

One thing a lot of employers I talked to told me was that they think that ITT Tech is a joke.

Sorry I couldn't help you with Devry.

I think UTI has a 80% dropout rate...man it's going to be some crazy ish

can't really say much for you man, but just good luck with it

Rob, that's interesting stuff about ITT, I was considering that as a backup if being an automotive tech didn't work out, I actually got something from them in the mail the other day, don't think I'll be considering them anymore.

Funny thing is, you are only paying for the name. I'm 2 semesters away from completeing my eet degree at my local community collage. but the funny thing is. 1 of the teachers who teach at my collage also teach at devry and another at itt. So say what you want but i'm getting the exact same education as either of those schools and for LOTS less.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Alot of my professors openly admit that they have taught else where, but when I talk to kids that are going to other schools It seems like I have more hands on time with everything cause I have more access to all sorts of goodies. I actually had to explain to a friend of mine that is an ee major at brown (an ivey league skool mind you) what a BJT does.

ECPI is one advertised in Virginia and much like the ITT and Devry schools.

A local Community college will provide as much knowledge.

It's a name game only once you get into an interview with a perspective employer.

Name goes a long way though. A degree from Virginia Tech, Cal Tech or even MIT is going to have a hell of a bigger impact than a degree from ITT Tech or DeVry.

Yeah, that is very true. The bigest reason i'm even at devry is because there is no way in hell i could ever get into any of those schools (my gpa is good but i couldn't break 1k on the SAT (the old one))

well at leat Devry is a fully credited uniersity unlike tech schools like ITT (i've checked government websites, it is true.)

Speaking of SATs, SATs are known to be cultrally biased. SATs Mean Scholastic Aptitude Tests, which those tests are designed to predict a persons future performance. Aptitude is the capacity to learn.

(taken from my physc notes)

As you see, this may not always be true. Everyone has the capacity to learn. Past Grades are a better predictor of a future grades than aptitude tests are.

I see the SATs as a way to bring your self esteem down. I am a B+, A- Student, and I could barely make it up to 1k.

Anyway, back on the subject of schools, I was thinking (considering) of attending ITT tech. Where I really want to go is MIT.

well as I have found out from the other posts ITT seems like a bad idea. I know the biggest reason i even went to devry is because it is an actual university unlike ITT. the only reason I've even posted about this is becuase i wanted to see if i can find anyone with a tech job or maybee even an alumni. I actually have nothing bad to say about Devry itself.

I dunno about the TV rule, I see alot of well known private schools with advertising campaigns. I see, hear and read adds all the time for schools like Kean, five towns, New York Tech, and Monmouth.

Meanwhile I've only seen like 2 tv adds for devry in the past year and a few scatered internet adds.

Yea that is true about the TV thing. The University of Connecticut advertises on TV all the time. I've seen other creditable schools advertise as well. Honestly its all in the message, listen to what they offer and you'll find out if it is a scam lol. I've seen schools advertise that they will give you a free $1000 tools set upon graduation.. kinda seems alittle wierd to me.

Hmm, Our Local Community College (also a Tech College) Advertises on the local AM (yes they still have AM...) Radio Station. I do see it in the paper, but never on the TV. Uconn (we just one in waterbury a couple years ago) Doesnt even Advertise.

A couple of my professors (or all I have so far) have Doctorates and Masters Degree's in what they teach.

DeVry is a good school, and having a degree from there can be an edge. You really need to work on your spelling and grammar. How you present yourself is just as important as your technical knowledge.

UTI is a VERY reputable automotive tech school, and they have a TV ad campaign that you can find on Speed TV ALL the time.

They also give you something like 1500 dollars worth of Snap On tools upon graduation, because a) Snap On is partnered with UTI, b) you need good tools, and lots of them when you become an auto tech, and c) Snap On tools are bloody expensive! haha, 1500 doesn't get you much from them, but you do get what you pay for and if I had money it would be Snap On or nothing

It's a good school, a friend of mine is going there and he is like uber smart and I have heard alot of good about it. I would have liked to go to a more traditional school like NJiT but my SAT scores prevented me.

Overall I'm happy with Devry, I just became a little worried thinking that I would have a hard time getting work once I got out. Like I stated in my first post in this thread, I can be my own devils advocate.
