Default The Karma is Bad

Glitter,

The way I understand it will work is that users will receive Karma points for the following:

Posting a reply

Starting a new thread

Number of people who read that thread

Arbitrarilly awarded by moderators

Here's the problem. It is already hard enough to follow all the various threads, and few of them seem to reach "closure". I already see a select few starting a whole bunch of threads at the same time. Those same folks are responding to each and every post in order to get that thread more hits.

You can see where this will lead. More threads will be started than are replied to. If someone has a thought, a new thread is started. If someone wants to respond to a thread, they will start a new thread instead.

The promise of reward for Karma points only exacerbates thread starting.

I think Karma points should only be awarded to members who help another user, or post a really useful suggestion/site. They should be attainable only in a few select threads, not ones like "Anything Goes". Either the moderator or the user asking for help should be able to award points on a "yay or nay" basis.

I'm not sure how you would manage this, but I can already see that the current system is going to be (is being) abused. Maybe the Karma points should go altogether. With the current method you are going to have a site that is out of control with meaningless content.

I enjoy banter as much as anybody. But the "Reward for Karma" will hurt, not help PimpRig.

ho 'bout this: only the person who started the thread can give karma on a "yay' or "nay" basis. The person that starts the thread gets a little button on each post in the thread and you can't vote for yourself. a "click if this post helped" kind of deal. seems like that would solve the problems until we get another ATI...

If it were up to the starter of the thread, I don't think many would bother doing anything about it in the first place. Although it does make sense, people are lazy.

Come on now! The title of the thread shoulda been like 'Bad Karma'. But anyway, I don't really see a problem with it since there isn't any reward for it. GK or whoever is going to redo it anyway so I guess we'll see how it turns out (unless he's unsure how to fix it).

Cyphre, which is why I am posting this. I know he is going to revamp the system, just want to make sure that he has taken the abuse into consideration.

There will be a reward for Karma and you know that some people will do whatever is necessary to get free stuff. My intent is to try to keep this a place where end user help occurs, and enjoyable conversation can be had. Under the reward system, if a user posted a legitimate question it would be buried within minutes.

Cy -- GK has mentioned being able to trade them in for PR merchendise, and I think people would tend to just click the button to say "yes, this helped me out"

EDIT -- Sorry BA.. posted while i was typing

Question True ...True

I just don't really pay enough attention to it to really care......Karma this Karma that........what is the real purpose of these forums?....I thought is was case modding, PR questions and answers, or computer related stuff with the occasional cheese. Fun is good...fun is fun. I agree with you on the bad karma BA, it could create tons of worthless threads. What exactly is its real purpose other than showing how popular so and so is?

I'm not trying to be a |)icK here, and I admit it is a great hack, but what would it actually bring to PR other than spammers trying to get to the top.......no I not talking about you Taz.:p MCP maybe LOL.

I'm only on for a few...but I wanted to respond to this thread...Once the new and improved threads reached 55 people, it has started to become more "serious" in the posts and threads.

In the beginning it was ok to "Goof off", "Post For The Hell Of It", "Crack A Hell Of A Lot Of Jokes", create "BS" Threads...etc.

Karma for now has been something just for fun and not to be taken seriously. Until GK modifies it, and has it completly up and running...it's only fun.

I fully anticipate my Karma Points and everyone elses to be 0'd out when GK gets the final version up and running. Would I be upset, HELL NO...because it has been a F'n riot and good fun...now that's KARMA.

BA and others...I hope this explains my take on KARMA POINTS.

Exactly. I know OMFG has seen it as well as everybody else who frequents the forum. There are a hell of a lot more threads being started now that there were on the old forum.

That is good in one sense, more interest in the site, but the downside is it is only a couple of folks starting them all.

Again, GK I know what you were attempting to do. Not allow post count to be the overiding factor in content. But I truly believe that its current implementation will hurt PR.

I am not totally against some sort of rating system that members can be judged against. Guys like lcpiper should be rewarded for all the help he gives n00bs. Wixx with his electronic skills needs to be recognized when he posts help. But you are going to end up with chaotic chatter if we keep the Karma system going.

EDIT: Taz, I know you were doing your stuff for ****s and grins. I'm talking long term. Just by what you were able to do shows the weakness in the system.

This was not directed against you bro, just against the rating system.

BA...I did you happen to read my post before you just submitted yours above?

I do agree with you. Fun is Fun in the beginning and soon it could really get out of hand if not planned out correctly. I fully beleive and trust the GK has taken a lot into consideration regarding KARMA and how to set it up correctly.

I would also beleive that if someone did abuse the new system, there Karma would be reset to 0 and so would there post count.

I will say this now, due to how many members are now signed up to the new Threads, I sure won't be posting as often. (As said before if the advise I would provide is the same as what has already posted, I will not post unless there is something else to be added).
