Default Pcapex is too cluttered

Since I have joined this site, it seems that the clutter has slowly taken over every single page. The reason I hardly post here anymore is because it is hard to find anything anymore. From the front page having triple ads of the same thing(right on top of each other), to the login feature not working correctly(I have to try 3-4 times to log in, says I am logging in, but never does).

When I go to the forums page I dont expect the forums to be a tiny list on the side to make room for more adds/recent post. Why are the recent post listed under forums? Isnt it already on the front page? What about the new post button? On 99% of all other sites this is how you view recent post....

I have tried to get many friends(probably 25 or so) to join up on this site and they will not do it simply for all the clutter. I looks very unprofessional in a way. I don't know a single other site that gets me fustrated just trying to get to a certain froum area to make a post.

Does anyone else feel this way? I DO NOT mean this as a Pcapex slam, but I think something needs to change when every person I meet at work interested in computers won't join because the site is too messy......they say it looks like a new site rather than a place to hang out and talk computers....

Finally someone who wont get flamed for liking macs actually notices how hard it is to actually find the individual sections of the forums...

My decline in posting/browsing is not related to my disaffiliation to the PC world but rather the increase in ads. Maybe a change in ads will result in more payout? GK might want to check out AdBrite as apposed to google ads.

it does have a very cluttered feel... Its actually a pain to navigate to the forum you want... which has led to my posting decline as well

seems to be a trend here.....

Back in the day there was ALOT more traffic than now. The span of new post goes almost 24 hours!! Used to be it didnt go more than 2.

I also noticed that total today there was like 12 people on at one time. A year ago, on a Sunday afternoon, there would have been 25+, and more often than not close to 50 people on. That right there should say something......

The way the site has went(ADS and CLUTTER)!, has ran everyone off........

Can we change something Gary? I would love to have the old community back....I miss it....

While I also suffer from the clutter concept, and the login confusion, and the "can't find the forum I'm looking for" disease sometimes ... you can't just pin a lack of participation down entirely on those reasons.

Yes, your experience w/ your friends not wanting to join is valid. Yes, there is more clutter (seemingly). But without hard facts, anything we say here is speculation, and "going back to the old way" is a common fallacy -- one can never go back. Half those participants may simply have moved on to something else in their lives.

But there is a question or a line that needs to be drawn between this site being profitable enough to keep itself afloat, and profitable enough for Gary to earn a livelihood for himself and his family. Elite membership (paid) used to mean "no adds" and those of us that pay it did so because the site was something we valued more than the time it took to load those adds. It also meant the site was self-sufficient. Is that still the case?

Don't know. We'll need to hear from Gary on this one.

Well I have been watching ad prices and Im sure this site pulls in more than 3k a month. It could probably get a lot more with fewer ads with dedicated sections for them. Just my thoughts.

Having visited PCApex everyday (apart from when it was physically impossible to get to a PC) for the last 3 years, I can't say theres been a massive change... but maybe thats because I havn't been absent for long periods.

Can't say I agree with the "clutter" and ads pushing people away. I for one couldn't give a sh1t what a place looks like, I just dig the e-company (trademarked...)

Who is it that you know has stopped visiting because of the ads and layout changes?

p.s. to view new posts, clicking the PC of PCApex in the main banner still works

RSS feeds, setup different forum sections as RSS on whatever. I use iGoogle and have the troubleshooting tab, and the anything goes shows up on my homepage main tab. The new posts button is in plain view for me, and if you chip in to gary to don't see the mess. Buy an elite account.

Now I can see from a newbs perspective.

you "hey check out PCApex"

friend "I did but I saw too many ad's and It made me not want to register."\

you "get over it"

As I'm typing this post I see one add, the FrozenCPU banner. Another is text google ads. But that is all. Read one toms hardware article, then try to remember how many ads you saw.

I'm pretty sure GK is in the middle of a move, and that means it may be a while before he gets to this. But IMO, I don't feel it's cluttered Look at a few other major website with forums.

PCApex.com - Hardware Reviews, News &; Mods - 2 ads on the homepage (not including the FCPU footer thingy)

bit-tech.net | Home - 4 ads on the homepage.

[H]ard|OCP - www.hardocp.com - 5 ads on the homepage.

So its it really that cluttered?

its not the main page they are complaining about.

its the "main fourm" listing...

most websites have a listing of each sub-forum in a 1" tall section, going down the page.

we have them to the right. it doesnt bother me.

to a new user it might, as some sections of the fourm have little activity, and with the new webpage, you can not see how many times someone has posted, or when they last posted

As a fairly new member, im not all that bothered by the forums. Yes sometimes it is hard to tell what forums are really busy, and finding the right one is a little daunting, but im not a big fan of the Reviews page. As a new user, i almost all but gave up on this site because doing my research at the time was just so damned hard when every other word was a pop that you just had to scroll your mouse around. I finally figured out how to get it to stop, and this site has been damned near a blessing since. Back on track with the forums though, i would rather see a full forum list with post times and frequency then each new post. But keep the new post counter on top, and just click on that to see whats new since your last visit. Just my $0.02

Well, someone paid attention to something, because the FrozenCPU frame up top is loading last and the load speed on these pages is significantly ramped up.

Good on ya, whoever did that!

I do have a number of tweaks lined up and they should be going into effect starting this weekend. I am all moved into my new place and am almost completely unpacked and settled in.

THere is some streamlining coming up including improved main navigation menus that you can use to jump directly to a forum area. Also, I have already removed a few ads from the sites as it is. More improvements are coming in that regard as well though.

The main forum page is the only part of the whole site that I find a little confusing at times. I liked the older style of listing each forum and recent posts in them. Other than that, I don't mind any of the new changes and don't find the site to be too cluttered. I still have quarky problems when logging in, but I think Gary will have those taken care of when he implements the new tweaks.

The old layout is still avail at the bottom of everypage (except maybe the homepage). Unless your talking about the forums list.

I still use original - expanded post info.
