I was experiencing some hardware issues with a bunch of my older PIII's, ones that had been running for months before I packed them up to move. Some wouldn't boot, while a couple would start to install windows but never make it into windows. It drove me crazy. I tried different CD's, HDD's, and CD-Rom/CD-RW's to no avail. The real kicker is I tried this trick once and it didn't work.
What I did was take the battery out and manually reset my BIOS settings. The first time i let it sit for just a minute or so. Didn't work and I let the thing sit for months. Then I tried leaving it out overnight. VIOLA she finally boots into windows. I thought of it because I remember overclocking an older rig and it decided to quit booting for a while. Left it overnight and she was ready to go. I ended up saving a few
mobo's that were about to get trashed.
In any event, I know I have been slacking on the OCing. I've been paying my mom's rent while paying my own bills . . . no money for gear or running folding rigs. I did manage an amazing 50 percent
FSB overclock on my dual 2.0 Xeons by turning off hyperthreading (stepping I have no likey the overclocky) and dropping the multi from 20 to 16. So the overall clock speed is about the same as before (2.4GHZ neighborhood). I found some volt mods that can be done but that requires much better cooling.
My next project is trying to drop a newer 3400 V6 into my Cutlass with a 2.8, but If I throw a computer in there, I'll be sure to show pics of it!
