Default Project: Speedy Barton

The hardware involved in this project is:
ABIT NF7 V2.0
2x 512mb crucial pc3200 DDR
Leadtek 5900xt
Tagan 330w PSU
Barton 2800+ 333mhz fsb

At the moment I'm using the following cooling hardware:
NV Silencer 3 (Rev. 2) (modded so that it runs at 12v all the time for max cooling :> )
ZN-NB47J
Copper silent 3L
(the light up version of the cooler shown in the link)
Nexus 120mm Fan

All this will be replaced with this watercooling kit I have purchased:
Water cooling kit

(I may need advise when fitting this.. it's my first )

The projects aims are:
Achive the maximum stable overclock for my cpu
Determin the performance increase from this overclock
Fit my new water cooling and see the performance increase this allows me to achive

Performance will be mesured via prime 95 as will stability

These are the current temps as reported by my mobo (so pretty inacurate) but I think they do show the need for some better cooling!

(these temps are at the above overclock while running F@H )

You should get a Epox 8rda3+pro or 8rda6+pro, They are kickass overclockers

Looks like a nice setup, you should be able to get 2.5Ghz out of the 2800 & NF7-S v2 combo & your temps will be pretty good as well.
If i remeber rightly when i had my 2800 & NF7-S v2 @ 2.5Ghz it idled @ 36 with load around 44/46ish on air with a Thermaltake Volcano 12 which was kinda loud

Just thought I would put a pic up of my rig before it gets water cooled (lots of dust!)

The epox board looks kickass but as the cpu has quite a high multi I doubt my current board will be holding me back.

The watercooling should really help out for OCing. I am guessing that you haven't been able to push your FSB any higher because of the temps you are encountering. Every 166 FSB AMD I have encountered (both XPs and Sempy's) can do 190-200FSB on the rigs I have. I'm pretty certain it is my mobo's that have held me back from going past 200FSB.

Your mobo should be able to bring you even further than that. With water you should be able to reach some good speeds. Your PSU does seem to be small for your application, however you do have 18 amps on the 12V+ rail, so hopefully it won't hold you back. Those NF2 boards are power hungry!

Good luck with the build up, and post up some more CPU-Z shots when you get some better clock speeds!

Please STFU..again you don't know what the hell you are talking about..how many different XP boards did you own? Got any threads with proof to back up your statement?

THE BEST Overclockers for AMD XP are the NF-7 Rev.2 and the DFI Lan Party Rev.B

The NF-7 has 2.1~2.2v for CPU's and can hit 450+FSB with no mods and over 500FSB with a few V- mod's/tweeks. I loved this board, but it met an early death due to an accident.

This is the board I would get if going after max CPU speed with something more potent than air cooling.

The DFI hits 520FSB out of the box with the right Bios, the only limit was it only went to 2v...it undervolted slightly and only would put out 1.95v.

http://forums.pcapex.com/amd_cpu_mot...ghlight=260FSB

http://forums.pcapex.com/pcapex_dail...ghlight=260FSB

This board was able to push to 540+ FSB and is perfect for air cooling....I was the first over 500FSB at Apex, and my record still stands today.

Sory about that, he is realy getting on my nerves with his misinformation...if you need any help with OC'ing it let me know!

I will back Necro 100% on this. Kinda miss my old NF7. The Epox boards are known for failing and having issues with memory. Although they are a decent OCer for the price. I would still get a DFI or Abit NF7.

thanks $solid$... I thought I got the best board (I know the DFI ones had cap issues and lots of failiures but were best for clocking) I just don't like to make a thread into a drama over a small issue.

I do have a question for you or anyone eles into watercooling though:
I'm planing to fill my W/C gear with an anti freeze distiled water mixture, how much will I need and what proportions?

Well anyways I saw that watercooling kit on ebay and was tempted to get it. I just wasnt sure how it would perform but I guess I will find out now.

I always like overclocking worklogs so Im going to watch this one.

They say for mix 90-95% distilled water and the rest antifreeze. I personally just run some water wetter and some anti bacterial. Good luck with the project. BTW the later NF7s to had a cap problem where they couldnt do a full 2v. I know mine did kinda sucked.

Back when I was experimenting with WCing, I bought a gallon jug of distilled, and the smallest bottle I could of AF. It happened to be motorcycle AF (supposedly developed for racing bikes), so I was able to get I think it was a half gallon or a quart size bottle...

As for the mixture, I seem to remember the recommendation being 20parts water to 1 part AF. Maybe another 1 part algicide/bacterial on top of that. I ran 15 parts distilled to 1 AF, since 20:1 made the blue of the AF way too light... Lighter than in THIS pic... It looks very light b/c the cam I was using ATT was either all flash or no flash, not very user-friendly...

Well the water could be bright pink for all I care, as long as it dosen't block up with alge after a week or so. I shall see how 1/20th anti freeze goes and if I have any growth problems up it to 1/10th (or buy some of the fluids that ger reviwed here from time to time).

Pleased I bought it as soon as I got the money into my account then amish kid

$solid$ necro you mentioned a cap problem with going above 2.0v? (although I doubt I will be putting more than that in)
how do I tell if my board has the cap problem?

Actually, that was Planet

But I am aware of the problem too. I had the first NF-7 Rev.2 at Apex, and it did not have this problem, so I cannot say exactly..but I would bet you can tell by the revision number of the board, or by looking at your caps.

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1028446609

MSI and a ABIT were actually sued over this (See above link) just shows what can happen (But very seldom is actually taken this far) if you put junk out the door in the name of "Cost savings"

http://forum.abit-usa.com/forumdisplay.php?f=26

This would be good place to look, I don't have time to sort through it right now, just search for "Capacitor"

There are lots of great stickies you should look through too!

I had a look at my caps... there not buldging at all. I think the problem was fixed by the time I got my board as it must have been one of the last ones made as it came with the most upto date BIOS. I bought 3 from the same place at the same time and non of them have buldging caps (my sister uses one and a freind).

Having a quick feel around though my mossfetts are getting quite hot though so I may chop up an old heatsink and stick it to them with AS5 thermal epoxy.

I did the wire mod on the soccet to unlock the multiplier. Unfortunatly this has failed to unlock my multiplier

I think I put the wire in the correct place jet when I lower the multi in the bios the pc fails to boot as it did before the mod. Any ideas?

Heres a pic of where I put the wire (I put a black line as it isn't very easy to see):

heres the site which informed me where to put the wire in the soccet:

heres a picture of my cpu if that helps:

From what I remember of my NF-7, there is no reason to do the pin mod!

What is probably happening (I had a similar experience BTW) is that certain multipliers won't work!

Try something else like 9x or 13x

Quote:
Enable the CPU Interface and put in the settings you wish to try. Surgery is not required on the CPU with this mobo with only the L3 exception on 333 fsb chips.

The other thing you might try is the L-12 mod

Quote:
With a mobile you will want to do an L12 wire mod with a stock ABIT BIOS or better yet get a soft L12 modded BIOS so the mobile gets a 400MHz ROMSIP instead of the 266 ROMSIP a stock BIOS would use. Tictac did some nice BIOSes but there are a ton of them for the NF7. Look at the Enduracell/Tictac if you go with AN7.

http://forum.abit-usa.com/showthread.php?t=105871

Or if your CPU was made after a certain date, the multiplier is locked! (Week 52 of 03?)
