Thumbs up Project: Simple Plan

Since I finished my previous mod, btw it didnt work out So i just got a new case and it looks fine.

As some of you might know, Im 17 years old. Its about that time in my life were I have to think about my future. I have recently recieved a scholarship from ASU for Computer Science.

So, I was thinking.. I need a really nice computer.
So after begging my mom for a computer, she is willing to help pay for it.

So here are the parts that I have chosen to go into this rig:

Processor: Opteron 146

Motherboard: DFI UT NF4 ULTRA-D

Video Card: evga 6800GS

Hard Drive: Maxtor 160gb 7200rpm 8mb cache.

PSU:
Undecided - looking for a good looking, stable psu for around $100.

DVD-rw/cd-rw:
Dual format sony DVDrw/cdrw combo drive

Memory:
OCZ Gold Series 1GB (2 x 512MB)

Case:
Lian Li PC-7 Plus Black

So now that you know what type of hardware is going to be running in this beast, I can give you my ideas on the case.

I want to go for a simple mod thats not to complicated, but very clean looking.

I love the design of this case except for the front 120mm Fan grill area.
So the modding ideas begin.

As you can probably tell from previous worklogs and such, Im not one for explaining things in words.. I like Pictures instead...
So I photoshoped the bottom fan grill area to what i image it to be like.

Then im going to stealth the Optical Drives so it looks like they are just faceplates..

Then im going to have a cool etched window,.. not sure of the design yet, but It will be sweet..

So yeah thats the begining of Project: Simple Plan

Anyone have any ideas?

Thumbs up

Sweet project!

I LOVE clean cases

Maybe paint the interior and do something around cable management?
I like the idea of camouflaging cables that you just can't hide and drawing attention to ones that you want people to see....

Just an idea though

Looking forward to seeing the updates dude!

Hahaha of course im going to do some heavy extensive cable management work.

I always spend alot of time on hiding the wires that I want hidden.

I was thinking about Lining the inside of the case with either chrome film, or carbon fiber.

Oh and I plan on doing that cool mirror effect on the bottom of the case.

On a side note:
Im trying to figure out handles for this thing..

I was looking at these handles, however I dont like the finger design.

So any suggestions?
Remember I'm Looking for a sleek design with the same kinda theme.

Mod them!!!

Tape them up, get out the dremel, hack off the finger bumps then sand and polish them till they're all nice and shiiiiinyyyy!

What about recessed-type handles?

You can get em in silver too (can be painted/modded to match)

No?? Oh well...

you can also take handles off of rack mount server chassis's and mod them onto a tower. I'll see if i can find a link to some but i do know that "Cherry Picker" rack mount chassis's have some pretty sleek and clean handles on thier units.

I know, I know its a really bad photoshop job, but I was just trying to make it real quick.

So yeah thats just another idea of mine..

I was browsing around on the internet when I came apon this type of mod:

A guide on how to do this can be found here

I think this type of mod would look really sharp with this project.

Ive been trying to find a decent 5inch LCD screen, but have come to no avail.

If anyone has any additional information on this type of mod along with purchasing options please let me know.

What about scouring eBay or other sites for a PSone or gamecube screen - they are sweet to use and(from what I've seen) can be modded reasonably easy

Good idea.. however..

The lcd itself is 5 inches however the chip used to operate it, is larger; and thus wouldnt work.

Gamecube Screen
I havent been able to find any detailed descriptions of the screen and chip, or how to mod it into a computer.

Have you decided upon a PSU yet? Also, what speed of OCZ Gold were you planning on purchasing? Lastly, don't you think that vid card is a little weak?

Im not sure if you have read reviews on the 6800gs but It preforms aswell and sometimes better then the 6800gt...
Unless you can find a card that preforms that well for my budget, That video card is staying.

as far as the memory is concerned.. this is the ocz gold that I plan on purchasing.

Also notice above it states I'm still looking for a good psu.

EDIT: I feel kinda foolish right now.. I need a LCD thats 5 inches in width, not diagnol screen size.

Yeah, a little harder to find on the web - I saw it in a book actually

PC Mod Projects: Cool It! Light It! Morph It! by Edward Chen

I didn't like the book that much, but they had a section on putting a gamecube screen into a PC

Yeah a gamecube screen is too small, I relized that I need an LCD thats 5 inches in width not 5 inches in diagnol size.. so that brings me to my next question..

What Diagnol size should I be looking for?

The gamecube, if I did my math right should be 4 inches in width, which is to small..
A^2+b^2 = c^2

were A is the height, b is the width, and c is the diagnol mesurement.

So can anyone find the dimensions of a 6" tft lcd display?
