Default Project: Old School Media Center

Lokee here what I found at a garage sale the other day... 15 bucks. It was broke but I loved the enclosure too much and it was begging to be modded...

edit: This is the first part of my project that was originally posted on another site... (unnamed for their sake) which died off... I like it here alot more so im re-posting it

It's an old receiver/record player from the 70's made by Lloyds (aka Eatons).

Some pretty bad damage in a few spots but easy to fix for sure.

Here we go again...

My planned design

Parts list:
Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard
AMD Athlon 2500+
ATI Radeon 9600
2x WD 160gb
enermax 350
Sunbeam 20-in-1 front panel (had to get it special ordered from asia since I can't get them here...)
some rounded cables
panaflow 80mm L1A fans
Zalman CNSP7000
Pioneed DVD-RW drive

These aren't the greatest specs but I dont have enough cash to get anything else right now. But it'll get the job done.

Started work on the front bezel, cut out where the DVD and front IO stuff's going to be. Thats my buddy's hand wet-sanding it down.

More updates soon :-)

Update 2

The Purolator guy brought me the top LCD! Yay! It's a BenQ FP567. I had to bust my ass to find a 15" panel in Canada.. Finally found one at www.ncix.com.

Thats the sexy new back i made for the PC so I can look in and admire my work. I'm going to paint the rear I/O stuff soon as well.

My modding friends know me as the plexi wh0re. This is why... As for the cage its rock solid. I had to add the top seperator because the drive's aren't going to get much cooling, so they needed to be seperated more.

I originally thought I was going to have to recess the PSU a little, so I added a chrome shroud. It looks like it's supposed to shoot fire or something...

It all barely fits in... most components have 1-2mm to spare on either side. The DVD drive has to hand over the motherboard as well (not ideal) but like I said, no $ to go get a nice mATX board...

I spent about 5 hours building a shelf that was PERFECTLY level, but then I fergot to take a picture. So this is it with the LCD sitting in the top. Eventually it will pivot up about 45degrees for an improved viewing angle.

I put it all in quickly last night to ensure it still fits. It's really cramped in there, but it all fit together without too much of me fighting with it. Havn't broken anything either this mod, so wait for the "F*K F*K F*K I-dropped-a-screwdriver-on-the-mobo post." I promise It'll be good

If anyone has any cool ideas with what I can do with all the sliders and knobs on the front tell me. I'd hate having buttons that don't do anything..

Hizzuh!

Great job! For the nobs and such maybe leds, lights, or go to a speaker for sound.

Damn, that looks really good. My only suggestion would be instead of tinted plexi, stealth the optical drive with the parts you removed.

Are you gonna do any kind of paint job on that thing? Or maybe apply some newer, cleaner veneers?

So far, i think it looks like it's coming along well.

The veneers just need a little polish to bring them back to life, they don't have deep scratches like the top does. I will re-veneer some parts that weren't before possibly.. to complete the look. Good idea :-)

Speaking of the top, Novus plastic polish is GOD. The scratches were terrible.. 5 mins of rubbing and it looks good as new.

You can see how shiny is has become in this pic...

Sadly I can't replace the tinted plexi like Spectrum suggested... I messed it up pretty bad while dremelling it out.

This would be a neat build if ya had made that record play on top a/ work, b/ run into the systems sound card....

Also, I agree that the 'drive' door needs to be stealthed with the original Tape cover..

Good news! I took apart my old Logitech Elite KB (sad end thanks to pepsi + lack of sleep + lan party) and im currently hacking it so that I can wire up the buttons in the case to it, and they will work with the apps such as iTunes.
