Default Project: Redneck rig

Ok so i just cant stand it and so im gonna mod this case for my new pc *seein as i got some time before i get all the internal parts* .Here's the pic of what im startin with and the smaller shell is gonna be a doner for the back cuz as you can see the tall case dont have any places for the PSU or I/O conn. on the motherboard. My idea is either gonna do the whole thing in camo clad with the inside black *gloss* and gull wing both sides. I was also thinkin of makin the motherboard tray drop out flat whit a hinge and latch system.
As this is my VERY FIRST attemp at this kind of thing *only ever painted a case* any and all idea's would be REALLY welcome .

P.S. being a NOOB ta PR .........if im not suposed to be postin here then sorry

Good luck with your project, you've posted in the right section on the right forum. Just remember, a pic is worth a hundred posts.

Im thinking dual 80mm ish (more if you have the space) blowholes where the red area is, then bondo the grooves whre the blue is too make it all nice and smooth for a beginning.

It's gonna be a pain converting that AT case to ATX and making it look good in the process.

I agree with the dual blowholes in the front though.

Took your advice and blew 2 holes in the front and did the bondo, gotta go buy some small rivits today as the old case is spot welded together and i need to install a motherboard tray and new back plate ................ oh and does anyone know a cheap place to get real light wieght actuators *only need to lift about 2 to 3 pounds* only places i know have ones too big for my idea.

Well, scratch that case for modding, i screwed it up big time trying to fit the ATX panel into that old cage sooooooooooooooooooo i got a different idea for the same MOD/Project and i dont think i can *wanna bet* mess this case up , gonna do the same camo idea and some other mods , or and idea someone comes up with that sounds good. but here's the case im gonna cammo out. Oh and yeah it's actually a rack mount case but im gonna make it stand on it's side like a tower.

so anyhow guess i'll start hackin on this and hope im a little lighter with the cuttin tools this go round

Yeeeeeeeehaw! Boy, dat's gunna look saweeeeet next time you go out deer huntin', all that cammy and stuff... Don't ferget to cut a hole in that there computin' machine case, so's you can have a cup/bottle holder fer yer beer! Remember not to drink and drive, you might hit a bump and spill yer beer... Are ya gunna make it so it fits in your pickup's gun rack, too?

Just kidding... I've heard horror stories about AT->ATX conversions (as well as some success stories, but those are fewer and farther between), so I wouldn't feel too bad about the first case.

As for the server case, just off the pics, you think you'll have enough room for PCI cards in that sucker?

Last thing, MORE PICS, MORE PICS, MORE PICS!!!

No such thing, if you have the space inside the case, a PSU to handle the power requirements, the patience to get them all set up, stealth the cables (though that might be a mod project in and of itself), and so on...

Granted, the biggest case I've worked with is the PC75 I have my main machine in currently, the mobo tray is not removable, but that's not a problem, since the dang thing is so big that if I ever lose the double-wide(<-- redneck humor), I can just move into the computer case...

What kind of stroke distance do you need on the actuators? What exactly are they doing? I've built a few from scratch using allthread rod, square tubing, a big nut, and some tack welds. robostore.com used to have these neat little pistons, don't remember how much they could lift though.

I'm pretty certain Grainger sell pneumatic and hydraulic pistons of various bores/stokes. But their inventory of electrical motors Is what they are known for. Anyway, maybe get an air horn mounted on top and use the 12v pump to power the pistons! Might need a hefty PSU for all of that stuff, but the pump can have a switch right on front of the case.

You might be able to use standard RC servos. They are easy to mod for continuous rotation if you need it and can be controlled from a serial or USB port with minimal hardware and expense.
