Default Project: Speaker Boxx

Alright Crew, this really isnt a case mod at all, but I still think people may get inspired to build their own. This project will be short, no more than 5 days (hopefully..) Before I begin though, I know **** about speakers or speaker boxxes..Ive looked it up and have NO data on the speakers I have, so I went into this blind folded.

I present you, Project Speaker Boxx

Heres a couple pics to start off:

To start Here is the inital Drawing. It was drawn after the prototype was build and experimented with...

Now here is phase 1 of the experimentation prototype:

This was just for experimentation. Next to it you see a jar. Ive used that too. I found that the shorter the pipe the more muffled it sounded, but the longer the tube the more clearer it was. So I went with what my ears heard. Gave good bass and treble. It sounded better when it was about 1 to 2 inches off the ground.

And here is the Amp

NOTE: Look to the left of the fan, you see 2 resistors. These serve one purpose and one purpose only: To load down the 5V line. If I didnt, I wouldnt get enough current and it would sound like crap. Those resistors are 1 ohm each, mounted on a heatsink from a switching powersupply. Yes they do get hot.

Oh and the amp needs to be cooled..badly...I got it from spec for free a while back. Ive only tested it once..Well it works (both channels) and sounds pretty good for a 50W amp.

Here are the speakers:

I got em for 9 bucks for the pair at those hardware fair things. They do give good bass, but only go from 80Hz to 20kHz . The speaker boxx I am building is going to be my rear speakers (since I had a spare pair of stock speakers Im using those..)

Now the Setup:

It looks messy but isnt. Ignore the sub woofer I got for 12 bucks from a home theater system, I decided to make rear speakers instead of using a big ass sub woofer. I'll be looking for a kit or a small amp for it (50W or so)

And now Todays work:

Yes that is bondo and my psychology book...The other one is done the same way. Im going to get to the bottom tommrow and make the legs and the brace things tommrow.

Now, Im wondering, should I paint it if so what color?

/end log

It works? Damn, I wish I could figure out how to wire it up, haha. Are these going to be hidden inside a wall or will they be free standing? Looks good so far.

um well you will see the speakers thats about it, it will be free standing on legs of course.

it wasnt that hard to wire it. Once screw doesnt want to come out how ever, so I have to use a clip on it..

Ha one mans trash is another mans treasure.

Hell of a project you got going Nerdz, Black would be a good color but maybe something a little different would be nice since black is a common color for speakers.
You could always go with a darker color like deep dark blue metalic. Or if you feel a little creative maybe where the speaker is put some chrome around it to break up the color so it will not be one solid color.

ps when i said chrome i mean mix it ether with the black or blue just my oppinion.

I just thought of something else that could give your speakers a little flare could add some sort of led's to it or el-wire for lighting effect.

I may go with the blue, I still have the metal cast blue, and some other metalic paint...(its grayish..looks like chrome but darker) I do have chrome left. Lets see..Red..white (eww) uhh this other color the color of my case..(kinda a silverish kinda).

Hmm I could..stain the wood..well that wont work..since I have bondo on it. I could go with a nice 2 tone maybe...

I would definitely go with the blue if you already have the paint.

Updates:9-16-05

Well been working on it and its Actually..finished...Now. I just have to bondo this peice (the other one is drying..) and sand it down.

Ive found some paint and heres what I have:

I really dont want to use the metal Specks paint (fckin 8 bucks!!!) because its also for Blue AT (which I really need to get moving on..)

I am probably going to go for a 2 tone look. I'll probably paint the top and bottom silver (the smaller can), and the body the dark blue color (the smaller can).

And here she is folks..

Along with bondo and nice shot of my parts drawers..

Enclose it in mesh fabric on all 4 sides. Will make it more visibly presentable.

Slider has a great idea there. Make it into a box with mesh on the sides. It'll blend in better.

If im thinking right , thier talking about the kine of fabric you see on the front of home speakers. On that note if you did inclose it with mesh some soft lighing behind the mesh would be cool

Hey Nerdz, i was lookin at yer design and if your gonna wrap it in fabric ya might wanna add small square poles at all four corners so the fabric will keep the square shape and not bow inward ............. just a thought
