This is my first mod so im taking advice. Im take a old computer that i had laying in my basement and moding it. I Plan on makeing a uniqu case with clors you dont see as often. The sceam is Black and Blue. This cse is only about 11in long and 16in tall. Im limited on space so i can put much in it.
Ive taken all the peices apart to pain the. So far im getting ready to paint it. Ive sanded down any designs that where sticking out. What paint do i need to use???

If you have any deas to make it cooler tell me please. thanx.

Depends on what you really need. Rustoleum works fine. Also, you might want to look at an auto parts store and check into auto paint.

Default thoughts...

Well, definitely get yourself a dremel, and a power drill with metal bits (yes, all drill bits are metal, but "metal bits" are made for drilling through metal -- found that out the hard way when I went through 4 of my father's wood bits while making a hole in my car's bumper, about 20 years back ...

Paint like Rustoleom is fine, but the suggestion for getting car paint is a good one. Make some quick sketches of what you want the project to look like in the end, so it will keep you on target with your project. And don't try to rush things ... every single step needs to be done carefully if you want the mod to look good.

This is all the painting guide you'll ever need. ftp://ftp.sybex.com/4360/4360ch08.pdf As far as what paint to use, I would probably use Duplicolor. Autozone and advance auto parts sell duplicolor paint. Good luck with your mod, get a dremel, it's very useful.

If you wanna to put in a side panel window. Your best option would be to use a jig saw. This will give you a straight cut and minimize the jaggies. How straight you cut is up to you.

Unless you want to do a creative cutout you can use a dremel.

Since you named your project deep blue. I would come up with other things that would compliment your theme.

Best of luck on your project! These guys have your question about painting all wrapped up, but I would reiterate the use of DupliColor paint. It goes on nice (assuming you sand inbetween, use the right primer, etc.), comes in many colors, and is capable of a showroom shine with enough elbow grease.

As for cutting the side panel window—definitely a good idea. Windows are the most basic, most used, easiest, and timeless mods you could do to your case. I haven't had good experience with using jigsaws, mostly because I never had a good sharp bit for metal cutting, and found it to always bind up and bounce, denting my side panel. If you're using a rotary tool (i.e. a Dremel) there's a nice trick of the trade, and it's simple as hell: use masking tape. Tape off the borders of your cut, this prevents scratching of your panel, and gives you a nice guideline to cut by. Just make sure to measure twice and cut once, or vice versa sometimes, heh. If you need any help with anything, just be sure to ask myself or any of these other finely qualified pimps and pimpettes.

My suggestion for this mod, after looking at the case, would be just some simple stuff to get you started, since this is your first mod. Do the window, and since you want an ocean theme, and possibly have access to a Dremel, how about cutting a window with a "waved" section at the top? Also, think about adding either a top window or a blowhole (exhaust fan at the top). Or, it would be really cool if you could use the scrap metal from your window cut and add a shark fin at the top, and give it a Jaws effect, heh. Take that into consideration!

Also, how about doing a front ducting mod? I always relate this to Bill Owen/mncpctech_guy's 'Turbine' mod. Bill wrote a nice tutorial on his site for this, and it's relatively inexpensive: http://www.mnpctech.com/mal1b.html Check that site for some awesome ideas and tutorials.

Again, for any more suggestions or help, don't be afraid to ask!

I also recommend going with duplicolor. Im doing my executioner project using duplicolor black gloss paint. If you like you can check it out here.... http://forums.pcapex.com/showthread.php?t=47497

Since your going for a black colored case......Your going to need to decide on whether you want to go with dull shiny look or go for the full mirror image look (like your car). I will tell you from experience if you want to do a mirror image look its tuff. I cant remember how many times i sanded through the clearcoat and had to try again. Also if you go with the mirror image effect. It would be best to paint and clearcoat it first before cutting out the window. Once its painted just use some masking tape to cover the panel and scribe your cutout onto the masking tape. Then cut it out. This will protect the paint while your making your cut. After your done the window trim will hide all your cutting mishaps and the bare metal after you cut it and deburr it from sharp edges.

Wouldnt you know it that was the first idea that popped into my head about the waves in your side panel window.

Almost before i forget always follow the safety steps when painting. You should wear a respirator that filters out paint particles and while cutting or sanding. The stuff is bad for your lungs and if you decide not to wear one. Be prepared to blow out some black snot out of your nose. It may be gross but im telling your first hand. When you think about it. Twenty five dollars is worth your health and lets not forget a pair of safety glass.

If you think about it......They didnt put warning labels on there just to ignore them. It affects everyone the same way. I know im preaching but better safe than sorry.

Great comments, Rockin'male!

I seriously think this guy needs to do the shark fin at the top...that would be so damned cool if he's going with a dark water/Jaws/Open Water-esque look. Plus, I've never saw that theme done, nor have I saw a shark fin on a case.

MOD ON!

IMO it'd look pretty sweet if you were to make the case out to be some sort submarine or (the outside) with the shark's jaws around the window as if it were breaking through. Kinda hard to describe but I'm sure you get the basic idea. Either way I think this has great potential.
