Default Project: LoX

I've been meaning to start a project of late and now I feel is the time to get the ball rolling. I won't post pictures yet simply 'cause it's late and I can't get to the rig now. I'll get some pictures up in the next 24 hours.

Basicaly I've got this duron in my loft. It needs a power supply and a hard disk. I can supply both but it may also need ram.

At the moment its got a plain beige case, and I'm pretty sure it has both side pannels. So i was thinking of cutting some nice but simple design and adding lots of strategicaly placed blow-holes.. Any input / ideas there would be great.

I was thinking about OS's and how I've always meant to have a dedicated linux rig so I could really learn to use it properly, so thats a real possiblilty for this project.

Anyway someone give me some further ideas if they got any. Cheers.

How about a nice debian or red hat box? Could be a pretty sweet window.... see link below.

Yeah thats pretty good. Given me an idea for another case tho

I'm not a complete linux n00b, but I don't really know enough to make a fair judgement on the distro front. I've played with redhat and mandrake installations in the past and always roll'd back to windows in the end. Mainly 'cause I only ever had one rig when I was young and my mum couldn't handle linux (neither could I). Taking past experience and other comments then, I'm thinking mandrake (wonder if I just stepped up on the linux pimp firing range ).

My original plans for case cutting had been to put exhaust in the top, 2 x 80 mml (or 1x 120 mml) fan(s) to cool the 9550 radeon via ducting, and then finaly cut a tall but thin PR type logo in the side. Obviously the finished logo is still subject to decision.

If you're going to do a Linux rig, you have got to do it up in the theme of Linux!

A few ideas:
Generic, simple and sleek window with a Linux penguin etched. Black, orange, and white coloring?

Or, if you're going to do a RedHat box, how about doing the RedHat logo etched on a side panel? Maybe a circular panel? Again, sticking to the red, black, and white color scheme?

Best of luck with the project, though! Mod on!

Gotta be Slackware, latest version is 10.1 and its sweeeeet.

A windows etching of Tux would look sweet too. If you go with Slackware, use a light blue and black theme on the case

Check out the Propaganda page on the Slack website, its got some great images, stuff you could use on the window etch too i think

I dunno man debian can be pretty powerful... I ran debian on my xbox and I used it more than my regular computer with windowz. Slackware is good but I think for a beginner it might be a little rough.

I'm really tempted just to turn it around and role it back to something like 2000 with litestep or something similar.

I could turn loads of services off it would be really slim line and it would probably be a better oc'er. Then again I don't know what Linux overclocking potential is......

Ok tomorrow I'm at home, so i'll dig out comp then and get pics.

What a shame, to be lazy and go to windows. You had a lot of potential. You let me down.

I'm not puting linux out the window on this project I just thought about an alternative. Guess that means you can't tell me what linux's overclocking potential is, maybe with a paticular ditribution in mind?

I am not an authority in overclocking so I am not going to pretend that I am. You can overclock in the bios but Im not sure why you would want to overclock a linux box.
