Default I'm new and need help BAD!

well I need help to get started "modding" if I'm gonna do it at all. I own a VAIO PCV-RX560 which was a gift when I got back from being deployed overseas. I happen to run in to this web-site by mistake but it got my attention with another dude trying to "mod" another VAIO. I have no idea how to get started modding is there a noob guide somewhere??? well when I play a DVD the computer after awhile starts to lag, so I opened the box and found: The cpu fan pulls the hot air off the cpu directly into the power supply (heating it up in the process) and the power supply works extra hard pushing it out the back. no intakes whatsoever. I have grown to hate it cause I feel the need to fix it. since there are cooling problems is a watercooling system applicable to fix all my cooling needs? or do I mod the plastic fans and the other cooling aluminum rigs that lay in the motherboard (sorry I dont know what its called) I know one cools the CPu processor and its a Everflow. I just dont know WTF to do. I dont feel the need to get a new box to transfer everything cause I just want to fix what I got. Any Ideas...

Welcome to PR, and God bless you for serving our country. You can expect to see Thrasher2 Pimprigs mascot, welcome wagon, ect.

I think a good place for you to start is the Pimprig gallery, forums, and a book called PC Chop Shop you can find it here complements of Xoxide.com. Speaking of xoxide you will need to know the basic modder supply shops. www.xoxide.com , www.frozencpu.com , www.acryan.com, www.crazypc.com, and since you mentioned watercooling www.dangerden.com are all good ones to get you started.

Now to actually help you mod. Pictures and Ideas would all help. Some good places to start for a basic mod would be things like Painting your case, cleaning up the stock wiring, cutting a window in the side of your case, Adding fan blow holes and last but not least BLING (such as lighting, LED fans and what not.)

ThatÂ’s some info on moding now your cooling problem. If you can flip that fan around to blow on and though the cooler that should cool better. Usually stock computer you can buy off the shelf have places for extra cooling fans just to keep noise down the manufacturer will not put them in (keeps cost down too). So you can add them your self with out any trouble at all. I bet that you will find the spots for fans will require an 80mm fan but you might need a 92 or 120mm so check that before you one.

If you wanted to get a little more in to cooling you should look for Artic Silver 5 which is a thermal compound that helps pull heat away from the processor quicker. I do not believe that water-cooling is necessary for you (But itÂ’s a cool toy). Hope this helps.

Hey high-speed, welcome to PR. What branch?

Modding is just that, modification. Making what you have truly yours. I'd suggest thinking of something that says "you." If you're a hooah type of guy, check out GrandpaNoob72's Infantry Tribute Rig. That might get your wheels turning. After that, your imagination is your limit.

As far as performance goes, we do need a little more info on the problems you're having. I've never used a fan to suck the air off of the heatsink, either. You might do some Googling on VAIO's to see if it's even installing right.

Welcome home! Regardless of branch (Army, Navy, Air Farce, Marines) or duty position, hats off to you! And, of course, welcome to PR...

One thing you may find is that companies like Dell, HP, Compaq, and Sony (just to name a few) have proprietary motherboards and cases made specifically for their computers. It would probably be difficult for someone who has never done it before to migrate all the innards from one computer case to another. Just as difficult, perhaps, to add watercooling to a proprietary case design that is usually built around the idea of saving space by cramming everything in as close to everything else as possible.

For instance, Dell's cases that open on a hinge (Dimension 4300 and up, just for instance) will probably be kind of hard to add cooling fans into, since the outer plastic shell is immediately followed by a SECC steel shell, into which all the optical drives and whatnot are screwed/bolted/riveted into. That's not to say that it CAN'T be done, just a bit harder than an individually bought case... The same goes for watercooling with proprietary cases.

One thing to keep in mind is the warranty on the case/computer itself. If the people/person that gifted you you Sony purchased an extended warranty on it, you may find that doing any sort of permanent modification (or damage, as they would probably think of it) will void your warranty. No warranty, shoot, go fot it. Get ahold of a good rotary tool (I recommend the Dremel XPR 400), a drill and some bits, and let the modding fun begin...

All that said... What has been said above still applies... If you can give us some specs (processor type, nuber of hard drives, pics of the case, etc) on the computer, we can more readily provide you with advice as how best to resolve the cooling issues.

i just happen to have a vaio similar to urs sittin in front of me. it looks to me like u could mount an intake fan behind the vent holes at the top rear of the case. just tape or ziptie a 60mm fan in there. another thing u could do is add a pci slot blower. thats all u could do without actually modifying the chassis.

I need to see some pics before I can get any ideas how to mod it. The airflow situation definitely sounds like it could use some improvement.

Thanks for the info, I'm learning slowly, but I'm learning. So its been a while turns out my computer crashed I dont know what was wrong with it. I was browsing and bam just sut off and at the start up window where windows xp is loading it would just reboot over and over again so I had no choice but to do a system recovery. I was mad all my music gone. I was so mad that i started figuring out if i can trade in my computer to SONY for a better one, and get this they would pay me $132.00 for my computer. Ha, so much for that idea. well I guess I'm going to have to mod this crappie desktop somehow. I'm still trying to get some pics. so thanks all for the advice. and well my computer is still alive, and I'll slowly mod it somehow to see what I can manage. Anyone live in Chicago? well got 2 go. check u later

Welcome to PimpRig Tryst i am not sure about modding a laptop that would be a scary thought on modding your laptop since you just baught it.You could end up voiding your warrinty. If I can make a suggestion i have a IBM Thinkpad A 31 and also has a dvd player and a dvd burner i found it also gets quite a bit warm so what i did was to buy a laptop cooler by Antec.I would suggest getting one of thease before you would do something you might be sorry for.http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...ducts&n=507846 This laptop cooler uses power from your laptop threw usb so that means no extra wires dragging around except power cord which i love alot since i travel alot with mine.I hope this will help you help good luck on what ever you chose to do.
