Default McGrail's Ghetto Cube

Heres my Work-log.
------------------
McGrail's Ghetto Cube

Project Goal
Take two Mid-tower cases (both 17 x 14 x 7) and join them together to get the Equivelent of a UFO/Yeong Yang Server/Gaming Cube without spending $300-500.

Additions to Case
#1- Mounting space on the secondary case for a radiator capable of mounting 4 120mm fans (2 on each side).
#2- Have jet black polished frame finish.
#3- Complete case wrap in Clear Blue UV rective Acrylic.
#4- Overclock.Net appliques and large General Grievous (Star Wars III) Professional Etch on the Main side Panel.
#5- Enough UV/Blue CC lamps to turn night into day.

Tools and Parts to be utilized
-Dremel (10,000-35,000 edition)
-10,000 RPM hand grinder
-Jig-Saw
-Ozcelik Ram Turret Milling Machine (made in 1963)
-43-bit drill set
-Dewalt 9.6v cordless drill
-120mm hole saw
-Various Screws, bolts, washers, and nuts
-5/8 Home-Hardware tubing (20-feet)
-Pentiar Quiet 1 3000 water pump
-Hayden Transmission Cooler #1405 (10 1/2 x 15 x 3/4)
-Two No-Name ATX Cases
-No-name Rivet gun
-Four White Swivel Wheels
-twelve Sunon 120mm, 84CFM@42dba fans
-Twelve feet of 5inch Plastic Dryer venting
-Four cans of Home-Hardware Black Shining finish Spray-paint

The Beginning..

Here we have two ATX Case Riveted together. Totalling a number of 4 rivets to have a tight hold.
Both cases had no side panels or front panel to begin with, so I decied to rip off all the other pre-mod panels, none of the white stuff in the picture now exists.
This means that all the exterior case armour has to be fabricated.. w00t, Let the fun Begin!

The Pump

Here is a picture of the giant pump that has to be air cooled. Unfortunatly it runs around 40dba, so some sound dampening will be needed in the secondary case.

Current Status

Well, right now I'm on idle waiting for the pump to arrive. For a radiator I'm ordering a 10x15x3/4 Transmission cooler. Enough for twelve 120's. (per side)
Its all painted black, top panel removed and most deviations have been removed, mounting the swivel casters tommorow.

Once the pump arrives, I'm going to hook it up through the Secondary Power supply that will control all cooling functions. Will it be safe to wire the pump directly to the power connection?

MORE TO COME!!!

Damn, that's gonna be one huge-a$$ beast! Make sure you put it on wheels...I suggest 20" bling-bling rims with spinners and 275 45R 20's.

Nice. I've seen that done before but they always looked like two cases side by side. I had thought through how I would do it, I am looking forward to how you do it.

This is gonna be interesting. I've seen some project logs of other people doing this. Most people run into problems when using bondo or filler on the top and front fascia, which cracks when the entire case is lifted. I can't wait to see how this comes along.

One think you might need more bracing of the two cases together. Once you fill it all up with parts like Spec said it will prolly crack the bondo at the seams. They also look to be different heights. You might wanna find something better to hold them together. Just some suggestions. The black looks good though.

Thats why you dont use bondo. Just spot weld all around and then grind and polish. That will hold it together! If you grind it down just right you will never even see the weld. Just my two cents and advice!

EDIT....OH YEAH WELCOME TO PR! Impressive as THRASHER said work log already on 3rd post!

EDIT....This is the look you are going for right? http://modthebox.com/reviews/mountai...o2/u2ufo28.jpg

Its good to see one of my mods has been taken seriously. lol
Well, as for bracing it, its using rivets, its held together quite well, but it could still use some help; Maybe take it into the shop and do some work on it with the MIG welder, the spot welder we have could do those angles.
As for the heights, They used to be the same height until I ripped the top off of the main case. I tried grinding them down with the Grinder I have here, but to no prevail, it wasn't powerful enough. I have to do that also when I go into the shop, I need to get rid of those awful bumps on the second case, then I can get started on a cover.

PhLaKz'R- Yeah, that is the look I'm going for, but without the price-tag.

I just went down the road today and bought two heatercores, one will hold Four 120's (2 per side) and the other will hold Two (1 per side), unless I feel like using all its space and running Four 90's per side (unlikely).

As for mounting them, thats what the second case is for. I will mount the small one at the front of the case with an exhaust out the side Via dryer venting, and the big heater Core will be mounted on a acrlyic or aluminium panel on the side, it will have 6 120's though since it will have a dryer vent on each 120 inside of the case pushing the air out through the top.

Heres a pic of them. I'll post again when I've got some stuff to show you guys.

Thanks for showing intrest in this, makes me feel good about bein' a modder!

What would be funny is if you put a Micro-ATX board in that behemoth...

No, that board is just holding its place for its last week in my possesion, being sold for w/cpu/mobo/mem/fx5200 for $140 (CAD) to a friend, I need to buy a new waterblock and a Tank-O-Matic. My home-made waterblock doesn't seem to cut it in the looks department, but the performance is unbelievable.
Anyways, a Full ATX-board will be in there, and the case isn't really that big eh.. Just has alot of volume in there, not much height, but a good width and depth.

Well, Pump came in today. The barbs were bigger then expected, so some modding to my "Ghetto" Homemade Waterblock will be needed, but it won't really matter, all I'm doing is getting new barbs, then they won't compress the water down considering that I built the block origonally for 5/8, but instead went 1/2
Heres the nice new pump (not really.. its used, but still..) and a picture of the block.
