Project SGi - Large Pics!

I just got the sgi workstation below from a friend for 10 bucks. It is pretty old. Has a 166 MHz processor. I plan on ripping out the interior and putting in a Duron 900 system, adding a couple of windows, cold cathodes. I plan on making it a dedicated LAN gaming server for LAN parties I help coordinate frequently at my university.

What do you guys think? Is it doable? Any comments or suggestions?

I have been looking for a larger cube'ish server case that would be capable of either houseing an extensive water cooling solution or 2 PCS (mobo) and a moderate water cooling solution.. but I dont want to pay a War pention for it... does anyone have any clues?

Skew, you realize that anything is doable if you set your mind to it. I actually like the look of that, and can hardly wait to see your touches on it. Since we're sorta speaking of servers, how much cpu would you need for a CS or MP3 server for a LAN? I'm guessing my old compaq could fill as an mp3 server, but for gaming how much goodies would you need?

Skew, I love that case! I also remember when they came out, they were pretty elite. I read an article recently about an old timer reminiscing about those computers. $10? I'd have paid quite a bit more for it.

Twizted, I don't know what you consider a lot for a cube case, but the best deal I could find was the YY cube case from Directron. It was about $150, came with 1 9cm and 2 8cm fans and a 300W Sparkle PSU. Of course the PSU was switched out and I'm adding more fans, but I'm real happy with my setup. First time I managed to fit my entire watercooling rig completely inside the case. No pics posted yet cause it is eternally work in progress.

Aren't all modders eternally fiddling with things on their case? I can't imagine ever stopping having to re-re-redo my ribbon origami because of lans and the like, LED's burn out, fans die... things get obsolete so you replace them and find something to mod while your at it.

Yeah we have Lans at the HUB. We have about two per semester. Around 50 people. It's a lot of fun. I've only got one more year here but hopefully they will stil be around by the time you get here.

I was running the CS server off of a celeron 466 with 256 ram. It was running just fine. A friend gave me a duron 900 motherboard and cpu so I plan on putting that in the SGi.

Yup. Haven't cut into it yet becuase i'm still in the planning phase. Don't wanna screw it up. Initially I wasn't planning on painting the case but as of recently I might. Do you guys think I should paint it? If so what colors do you think would look good.

paint that thing. i say a high gloss white. just my opinion. i love it though. it has some great potential. keep us updated. and now im off to bed as me and my dad are going dumpster diving tommorrow at bestbuy. maybe i shall find some goodies

Yeah I still haven't decided on a color. Although candy apple red does sound kind of nice.

I did the first round of modding this past week. I stripped the old power supply and i'm in the process of put a 300W PSU in the casing.

what did silicone graphics, oh its SGi now, use back then? is was it SPARC? i can feel the proprietary design cutting off all upgrade options but here comes the dremal...

I think a nice glossy blue would do it nice. Not dark blue but not medium blue, somewhere in between.

I completely forgot about this thread. I haven't gotten around to painting the case but aI did almost completely finish modding it. Got the PSU in, mobo, window, and cold cathode. Still a little rough around the edges.

It needs a paint job real bad, and i still need to plug some of those holes you see in the pics. I haven't had much time to work on it. Check out some of the pics below.
