Question Suggestions before placing my order

Hello all,

I have spent a long time compiling my system. I am about to place an
order and want to run it by the people on this site first. I
would appreciate any comments or suggestions that you all may have to
offer.

Link to system configuration:

Thanks

Drop the floppy, you don't need it, go with XP Pro and get a Radeon 9800 Pro instead. And welcome to PR.

Agree, with spectrum except it never hurts to have a floppy.

You can get full towers with power supplies for about 3 more dollars. (Unless, you want a mid-tower and feel that the given PSU will be too weak, which it won't)
I agree with both of Spectrum's suggestions: drop the floppy, and switch video to 9800 Pro.
Welcome to PimpRig!

That's a mighty power supply you have on there. Probably mightier than you need. But here's your welcome to PR advice: take every answer of mine with a grain of salt.

EDIT: If you really need a floppy for data transportation purposes, just get one of those USB flash keychains instead. The floppy... just rip that out of another computer if you need it for sick computer or whatever.

I've got that same power supply.... it's got a hell of a lot of kick in it, anything over 450 is probably overkill unless you have a peltier and a watercooling setup. Even then, you should run the peltier off a separate PSU.

I believe there are places where you can get a full tower with a 420 Watt power supply for $120. You might wanna look into it. Lemme try to find a link..

Drop the 1gb Corsair for this 1gb OCZ (2-3-2-6 timings, $250)
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...146-896&depa=1

Drop the 9600 XT AIW for a 9800 Pro (use money saved on RAM)
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...102-268&depa=1

Grab a PCI TV tuner card if you really need it, ATI;s one (same as on AIW's) is $95, hell the 9800 Pro + AIW Card = Less than 9800 Pro AIW...

and go XP pro

P4C800E -Dlx - great choice on that board! been using one for ever now....did a couple v-mods to it, but i am an extreme overclocker......i am running a Antec 550 True power, you can never have to much power....
i would also do the 9800 pro and ditch the floppy.....but everything else looks good......nice choices!

Just a nOOb here, but I'd keep the floppy if I were you.

Granted, you'll never need it...

...except to use the six 3.5" boot disks when you get a serious BSOD error and need to get to the recovery to fix it. Had I not had a floppy, I would have lost all my data since my last backup.

Just my experience...

That was one of the changes I was considering. I posted my configuration on a homebuild newsgroup and a bunch of people told me to go with XP Home. I finally gave in, but I believe that I am going to go ahead with the Professional version.

Thanks for the input!

I want to take advantage of the dual channel RAM support. Can you provide a link to a twin pack version of the RAM you recommended?

Home = missing some "features"
Pro = having lots of "features" that eat resources and that you'll rarely use and end up taking a lot of time turning off...

I dunno, to each their own.. I took XP "lite"

I use Pro, but I stripped it down in services.msc to the basics. Solid as a rock, and I can use the "features" when I want to.

First of all, I like that you're spending a bit of extra money to get the Pentium instead of AMD. Pentium is much better in terms of heat, noise, and reliability. I only wish I had the money for one.

Second of all, I say keep the floppy... I know from personal experience that they're useful. Taking stuff to and from work/school. Installing those SATA drivers that you'll need for that Raptor...

Thirdly, don't go Pro on XP. It is a big rip off, and I know that this post will probably be edited to prevent me from saying that illegal downloading is okay. But in this case, i truly think it is... there's barely a difference between the two, except in price.

Fourth, I like the choice on the case. Lots of modding potential, something that I didn't look into at all when I bought my Raidmax case with the generic rectangular window and the pointlessly placed fans.

I'm not sure, but did I not see a sound card / audio setup in there? Well, if not... what are you thinking? I use graphics card potential every once in a while... but I am constantly listening to music... watching movies... etc and using all of it... well... i'm probalby just blind and didn't see it... but if not... then definitely buy something.

good choices all around though

Okay now that it was pointed out I can see that you did recommend a dual pack. Forgive me, but I don't know that much about memory. Can you or someone else explain why this memory is superior to the Corsair that I initially picked? I picked the Corsair because of a recommendation from someone else.

Thanks to everyone for the valuable advice!

I will be buying a sound card, but I am pushing my budget with what I have already. Will probably choose an Audigy sound card from Creative Labs.
