Default Project: Dream Machine

Well I think it's time I start living up to my CAD-Hoe status. Let's face it, the only other person who is known for their CAD skill is decog. So, my next project is, you guessed it, an Old Skool CAD-Rig I have already begun ordering parts for her, she will be a Dual Pentium III 1 GHz on an Abit VP6. I have one of the processors already and two matched Pentium III 866's. RAM will be 2 gig of PC133 SDRAM, good stuff too, haven't decided on a brand yet.

And the video? A 3DLabs Oxygen GVX420, dual GLINT rasterizers and 128MB SGRAM. This is a huge card! The Voodoo 6000 got nothing on this! Have a look at this!!

http://www.3dlabs.com/product/oxygen...x420_index.htm

This card is actually Floatmaster T's but he gave it to me for 4 dollars shipping.

I haven't decided on a case but it will be tall. Very tall, server tower, beige. There will be a window. Storage will be 2x 100GB WD's and two SCSI 9.1 gig 10K RPM Seagates on an Adaptec SCSI card I got. Case will be on wheels. May even be motorized. The theme will be CAD, obviously, but I haven't decided on what it will look like. I was thinking of painting little measurements and brackets along the sides to make it look like a plotted CAD drawing.

OS is W2K Pro and of course, AutoCAD 2002, 3DStudio and Rhino.

the more I think about motorizing the case the closer I am to doing it, when I get all this hardware installed it will be very heavy to lug around and it would be quite odd to see it rolling scross the floor by itself at LAN parties.

Well at least in the fact that you want to make it motorized and have dual procs... Hmm it doesn't sound too much like Heavy Metal afterall

What type of SCSI are you going for?

SCSI is an Adaptec AAA-131B w/2MB cache.

I have decided on a different motherboard, a Gigabyte GA-6VTXD dual Skt370 board, the VP6's are getting really expensive on ebay and they are auctions, Directron has them in stock

I'll probably start out on dual 866's until I can find a matching 1GHz PIII, I already have one (in my Dell Optiplex GX200) but if I get another I'll put the 866 in the Dell and put the 1 gig's in Dream Machine.

I also have a Promise ATA100 RAID card at my disposal.

Very long. I decided to put it up on PR because PR has been slowz0r lately and haven't seen many projects up.

The 3DLabs card shipped out today and I should have the Gigabyte by the end of next week.

Still deciding on a huge server case.

Hey, I remember that card from way back when...friend of mine who did graphics and the like was drooling over it at one point and damn that card is huge. Bad enough my 5900 barely fits even when my hard drives are moved down the bottom of my case, but do you need some extra large ATX case to fit all that?
