Default BeetleMan's Art Deco PC

I've decided to make an Art Deco inspired PC for the PCA, A4T Mod contest.
It will feature wood, frosted glass, and polished aluminum...

The guts will consist of:
Intel C2D E8400 with Koolance 330 water block
Asus P5K motherboard
2Gb Kingston HyperX PC8500
Liteon Sata DVD Burner
2 x nVidia 7800GTX in SLI - Danger Den water blocks
Not sure about HDD yet

Big thank you to DarthBeavis for the 7800's and the water blocks. I owe you big time!

Quite honestly, I think if you do a nostalgic piece with, say, the pin-up in your av hanging out of a window, that would be quite the sight for the contest...

No problem bro, I will send her as soon as I'm done with her. There is some wear and tear already, and it might get worse before I'm done, so all ya gotta pay is her Greyhound ticket....

Bought a case today, that will be the base of the mod, really only the frame will be used, so I went cheap, an Ultra Aluminus, should be tall enough to house my pump and radiator etc...
I will be starting dissecting the case tomorrow.
Lots of it will not be used, as the front bezel, most of the drive cages and the windowed side panel, will all be thrown out...

I again had a tough day at work - sooo tired....
I got the case taken apart... earlier and after 9 million rivets drilled out I should be ready for a new layout...

Bought some wood and aluminum for my project today, will get workin' on that this weekend...
To give you guys an idea what I'm up to....
BeetleMan's Art Deco PC-image1.jpg
The darker portion is the shape of the case, the lighter is the shape of new top and bottom of case.... yes it will be laying down...

BeetleMan's Art Deco PC-image2.jpg
Top and bottom consists of 3 pieces of wood... 1/4 inch oak plywood, 1/2 inch mdf and another 1/4 inch oak ply.. sandwiched together.
The MDF will be in the middle, and cut about 1/8 smaller than the plywood to make a reveal.
The reveal will be trimmed with 1/2 wide polished aluminum.

And of course the plywood will be sanded, sanded, sanded, stained, polyurethaned, sanded, polyurethaned, sanded to a very smooth finish.

Worked some on parts for the front bezel yesterday and today.
I glued and nailed some 1/2 x 3/4 pieces of pine together to create a 1/16th reveal.

BeetleMan's Art Deco PC-aug10_1_3.jpg
After some planing (small hand planer) and sanding it's time to test fit the 1/2 x 1/16th strip of aluminum that will trim out the reveals.
BeetleMan's Art Deco PC-aug10_1_4.jpg
It got a nice snug fit.

The wood will be further sanded, stained dark and polyurethane'd.
The aluminum will be "polished" with 800 grit automotive sand paper for a satin look.

I also today created a "button", "draw-pull" or whatever you want to call it.....

The center contains of a piece of 1/2" thick mdf, cut out with a hole saw.
The slot in it is being used to bend, and hold aluminum trim in place.
BeetleMan's Art Deco PC-aug10_2_1.jpg
It got two circles cut out of 1/8" birch plywood, once again with hole saw, slightly bigger than the one I used for the center.
BeetleMan's Art Deco PC-aug10_2_2.jpg
One piece of aluminum, bent to fit.
BeetleMan's Art Deco PC-aug10_2_3.jpg
Drilled 2 holes in the aluminum, and counter sunk them.
BeetleMan's Art Deco PC-aug10_2_5.jpg
Attached the aluminum using contact cement, and screws.
BeetleMan's Art Deco PC-aug10_2_4.jpg
The top and bottom are not yet attached, and need some more sanding before stained dark, and polyurethane'd.

Short update.

Made a "fake" corner post... its made by gluing a 1x4, a 1x3, a 1x2 and a 1/4 inch strip of wood together, all red oak.

This post will be the left corner of the computer, the right corner will be rounded....
Got more sanding to do, and some staining....

Also got some hardware in the mail today, donated by DarthBeavis.
2x nVidia 7800GTX's
2x Danger Den NV-78 water blocks for the GTX's
1 Koolance 330 CPU waterblock

Thanks again DarthBeavis!

Bought some fabric (burlap) today for the fan grilles, think: 40's radio speakers.
Got started on one grille, 2x120 fans, cut it out of red oak... will make 2 like it, 1 for the radiator and one for 2 120mm exhaust fans.... also did some staining...
Still got a lot to do, Sept. 1st coming up real fast....

Will update tomorrow with pictures.
